A chaotic good web designer trying to not piss off the Internet. I'm currently building Table Slayer, tooling for tabletop map displays. Previously I was an early designer at Elastic and led their UX team for 6 years. Before that I was a founder of Whiskey Media. You can find more info about me on my website https://davesnider.com Can contact me dave.snider [at] gmail.com

What Hacker News says?

  1. I built a command line bookmark manager in Fish and FZF that stores data in Xata, which I then pull into my website as well. Source and demo available on Github from the article below. https://www.davesnider.com/posts/bookmarks

  3. Fun anecdote time. I worked on (and very briefly ran) MP3.com after the CNET acquisition of the domain (CNET only bought the domain, which I think was for $1 million). It had nothing to do with the original site mentioned here (good on them for archiving it). The initial idea of the CNET version of the site was that in 2004 we assumed you would need a directory of which music was on which service. At the time there…

  5. I work as a Web designer in Linux. I'm not sure that I could completely get away with it if I wasn't already pretty code / frontend focused. I reach quite a bit to web-based tools (Figma, Whimsical) when I need to do prototyping, and find things like Krita and Inkscape more than competent for actual pixel pushing. Where things fall apart is when you're in larger teams where everyone uses the more common tools on the…

  7. Right now Linux on Desktop offers: - The best developer experience with the most hackable toolkit - A great gaming experience that plays the vast majority of titles on Steam - A "dumb by default" non-cloud enabled workstation - IMHO the most well-design, does most things "vanilla" desktop environment with GNOME. The tradeoff is - You will need to learn to update your system and learn some new things. Things will see…

  9. NNN has a lot more features and is very customizable. Most NNN users graduate to using it as a small file scripting system through use of plugins. Walk looks minimalist on purpose (which is nice for people that don't need all that NNN has to offer). I made a quick tutorial on NNN showing off the power of its plugin system if anyone is interested. It's become a bedrock tool for me. https://www.davesnider.com/posts/nnn

  11. Saw this and laughed. While not entirely the same, I made a website with similar goals earlier this year. I am another Dave, another designer. There's a funny part about being a web designer and then having to build your own site. You sort of want to drop all the bullshit, and just focus on typography and spacing. No color, no tricks, just simple stuff. It can be surprisingly hard. I went with Astro, which I think i…
