What Hacker News says?

  1. I agree 100%. Another point: we're actually talking about strategy (Stratechery/MBA worldview) vs. operations (build the best product, do things well -- HN view). This is a well-worn argument in business circles and it's funny to see it manifest here under a different name. http://www.davidralbrecht.com/notes/2018/09/strategy.html Hackers are operators :) I get the sense that strategy vs. operations matters differen…

  3. Kind of a hodgepodge: Rack up experience. It's much better to be working than not working. It is much better to have 2 years of experience and learning vs. 6-9 months looking for something perfect -- this is especially the case for juniors. Just take the first job you can get. Also, don't underestimate how much the rate of learning differs between various workplaces. Try to work somewhere that invests in people, esp…

  5. Simple: nobody has time. Due to capital availability [1], the SV/SF ecosystem is highly optimized to favor spending money over time. That's why you get much-more-expensive WeWork over private office leases, everyone wanting to pay 2x as much for very senior staff, and few companies able to build a good content marketing brand. Patience is a huge competitive advantage, if you can manage it. [1] http://www.davidralbre…

  7. I went to China a few months ago and had similar thoughts: United States There's a lot more to say, but overall, the trip made me very optimistic about the future of the United States. China's cost advantage is disappearing. A 1.5-hour boat ride with a bit of transportation on both ends was almost $100 (US), and that was after we'd haggled them down. At those prices, cost advantages aren't a slam-dunk, and the dista…

  11. No. I have an undergraduate degree in computer engineering (basically this stuff) but do mostly software these days. You're better off going deep in one or the other, either how to design this stuff or the algorithms/math/CS-heavy parts. I've written a lot about this on my personal blog. http://www.davidralbrecht.com/notes/2018/06/specialization.h... http://www.davidralbrecht.com/notes/2018/10/python:-the-new-...
