Why HN links it

HN readers link Espressif's developer blog for technical explanations: the architecture behind its response to undocumented ESP32 Bluetooth HCI commands, and the logic behind its SoC naming such as ESP32-S31.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 3 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

https://developer.espressif.com/blog/2025/03/esp32-bluetooth... This is a more detailed and informative link than the press release above: > Espressif will provide a fix that removes access to these HCI debug commands through a software patch for currently supported ESP-IDF versions > Espressif will document all Vendor-specific HCI commands to ensure transparancy of what functionality is available at the HCI layer

  3. That's about the right response. These don't expose a command across a security boundary. You can only exercise them if you're already executing arbitary code on the main CPU core. Honestly the original Tarlogic report was so irresponsible that I have to wonder if Espressif is considering legal action. Note btw that the linked press release points to the more detailed blog post explaining the architecture: https://d…

  5. I'm puzzled by Espressif's naming here. We had the ESP32-S3, so "S31" sounds like "S3, variant 1," but this part doesn't really look like a simple S3 variant. And then there's an ESP32-E22, but no E21 or even a plain E2 anywhere. Edit: found an article explaining some of their naming logic, and said that the SoC naming will get its follow-up article, but sadly it never happened. https://developer.espressif.com/blog/…
