What Hacker News says?

  1. Knuth still does code basically on a daily basis. At least that's what he said in some interview (writing two complete programs per week on average, small and large, and that definitely qualifies him as software engineer among other things) and I have no reason to doubt it. https://www-cs-faculty.stanford.edu/~knuth/programs.html

  3. Knuth in the wake of the Iraq war and the Abu Ghraid crimes asked some "Infrequently Asked Questions" which are of course highly political. He kept this page linked on top of his home page. And in 2022 he wrote a postscript with more political questions. https://www-cs-faculty.stanford.edu/~knuth/iaq.html

I'm not familiar enough with the details to deny that she didn't "spearhead" the Iraq War. However I'd like that a person that was involved in the wrong side of decision making for torturing people[1] and defending massive surveillance [2][3] to be as far as posible of a backup company. I suggest to visit http://www.drop-dropbox.com/ and https://www-cs-faculty.stanford.edu/~knuth/rice.html for more arguments against…

  7. What you describe is how I tend to comment. At the opposite end of the spectrum we have Knuth's 'literate programming', exemplified in Tex, which has as its goal 'making programs more robust, more portable, more easily maintained, and arguably more fun' [0] by merging documentation with code. I'd bet if you counted documentation lines vs. code lines in Tex they'd be near 50/50, and I'd bet that if we asked Knuth whe…

In fact, Donald Knuth is so below average from a productivity standpoint that there is an entire book published about books and papers that Donald Knuth published: http://www-cs-faculty.stanford.edu/~knuth/cp.html

  17. My favorite Knuth quote: "Email is a wonderful thing for people whose role in life is to be on top of things. But not for me; my role is to be on the bottom of things. What I do takes long hours of studying and uninterruptible concentration. I try to learn certain areas of computer science exhaustively; then I try to digest that knowledge into a form that is accessible to people who don't have time for such study."…

  19. his fvwm config is public, and there's a screenshot floating around, if you want to take a closer look https://www-cs-faculty.stanford.edu/~knuth/screen.jpeg the only mistake you won't be able to correct from observing screenshot is the "look like org-mode" thing. it's https://www-cs-faculty.stanford.edu/~knuth/programs/color-mo... minor mode which lets you highlight arbitrary lines in a buffer.

  21. I once had the pleasure of listening to Knuth speak at my university's computer science department. I joined the very large queue of other people, and expected the great man to totally revolutionise my understanding of – well, I didn't know what, but something . Computer programming to TeX, I don't mind. I was expecting enlightening solutions to famously difficult problems, a great study of algorithms, that kind of…

  25. This comment made me check the history of the official TAOCP page [1] through the Wayback Machine. Volume 5 was estimated to be ready in 2009 at the very first snapshot (1997), in 2010 by 2003, in 2015 by 2007, in 2020 by 2010, in 2025 by 2015 which is the latest estimate today. At the first glance this looks like an eternal "10 years later", but note that that estimate didn't change since 2015 and the 2025 estimate…

  29. I've been randomly skipping around inside these books for a long, long time. They're full of little gems that you won't find elsewhere. For example, in Volume 4A there's a simple technique for comparing two pointers in bit-reversed form. This technique was patented by Hewlett-Packard as a method of randomizing search trees (treaps): https://bugfix-66.com/fdb8bb4fa84cf810aa25ff40c88a13c1874410... From Volume 3, here…
