Why HN links it
HN readers link Raphael Poss's posts on Go's x86-64 calling convention and on Rust for functional programmers. One commenter calls the Rust post a favourite take on how functional constructs look in Rust.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 4 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

HN discussionnot gp, but it looks like go's calling convention requires pushing all function args and return values to the stack [1]. thats always going to be less efficient than most C calling conventions, where (iirc) you put what you can in registers and only use the stack if registers aren't enough EDIT: and all registers are caller-saved. so when calling a function, all register contents will be saved on the stack (and rest…

HN discussionIf they used unwind tables for panic, it would be cheaper than a deeply nested stack of mispredicted “if err != nil” branches. But according to https://dr-knz.net/go-calling-convention-x86-64.html they don’t, probably because you can randomly defer stuff anywhere and it isn’t statically scoped.

HN discussionCompletely agree. This article [0] by Raphael Poss, explicitly listing how functional constructs look in Rust compared with "pure" functional languages is one of my favorite takes on Rust. [0]: https://dr-knz.net/rust-for-functional-programmers.html
