What Hacker News says?

  1. No, many of these are specific to Postgres. I don't know of any other database that has Postgres's rewrite system called Rules. Also other databases handle mixed-case identifiers differently. PostgreSQL is one of the databases that adheres the SQL standard most closely, which makes you think that many of these things would apply to other databases. But that's just it. Databases follow the standard willy nilly, so th…

  5. Don't have experience with Rethink, but Mongo scalable? That's a joke right? Here how it compares: http://www.datastax.com/wp-content/themes/datastax-2014-08/f... The only values that has higher than rest are on page 13, except those are latency and lower is better. This paper shows clearly that Mongo doesn't scale. And even for single instance Mongo is slower than Postgres with JSON data: https://www.enterprisedb.c…

It has a similar concept if you need MVCC (with InnoDB). It also has a concept of transaction IDs. And also need to clean them up (purge). They will both have table bloat if not done. Since details matter, there's a post that explains it far better than I could: https://www.enterprisedb.com/blog/mysql-vs-postgresql-part-2...

  13. That's very interesting. At the moment, PostgreSQL keeps all versions of all tuples in its heap files. Inserts, updates, and deletes all result in addition of new tuples to the heap, and the engine keeps track of which transactions can see which tuples. The vacuum process deletes tuples which are no longer needed, but in the meantime, there is bloat. zheap would keep only the latest version of each tuple in its heap…

  17. Hi, OP. First, congratulations on launching a product, and thank you for giving it strong copyleft! I ran it as directed, and it's pretty slick. I have some detailed comments on the database side of things that I hope you'll take seriously before trying to scale this. I've ran a distributed Postgres DB at scale for a well-known company that used `yjs` for precisely the same thing you're doing here, so I have some re…
