What Hacker News says?

  1. This is the only reasonable solution. I've got an OLED LG "TV", connected to an Apple TV and a receiver for proper audio (using HDMI ARC). To turn everything on, I press a button on the Apple TV remote and everything is up and running within five seconds or so (from standby/sleep mode). Powering off the Apple TV also turns off the display and the receiver via HDMI CEC. Edit: http://www.eiman.tv/misc/power-on.mov

  3. Here's a nice graphic showing a baby's sleep pattern during the first 15 weeks: http://www.eiman.tv/misc/somnrytm.jpg Since the text is in Swedish, here's roughly what it says: Every row is a day, black is sleep, white is awake.

  5. That takes you towards HTML- or XAML-style UI definitions. I'm doing something like this in my (experimental) layout lib for embedded devices. I've written a bit about it: https://www.eiman.tv/blog/posts/liblayout/index.html

  9. Upgrades should already be possible, using bundles and the Complete My Bundle functionality. It's not terribly user-friendly perhaps, but should (in theory) work. A bit more expanded at http://www.eiman.tv/blog/posts/upgradepricing/index.html - haven't looked at this since 2016 though so perhaps something has changed since then.

  13. Even though my blog is very low traffic, and that's probably part of why my approach is working, it has yet to receive a spambot comment after four years. I'm guessing this is due to its... non-standard construction. It's pure XML plus an XSLT that transforms it into HTML on the client side. A more sensible approach might be to use XSLT to transform just the FORM stuff on a "real" blog system, but I haven't tried th…

  15. I had a similar idea a while ago, and put the results of my brainstorming here: http://eiman.tv/misc/http-content-signature.html The idea is to add a signed hash of the content in the HTTP headers, along with a way of verifying the signature. The point of it all is to make it possible to verify the source and integrity of content served from non-HTTPS servers. Feedback welcome!

  17. I think that my interactive roguelike version of the same thing is spiffier! http://eiman.tv/misc/3d_ascii.html (No, it's not a roguelike -game-, just a proof of concept thingie for the display variant - but don't forget to scroll around the map to see how it'd look)
