What Hacker News says?

  1. Our company [0] was also hit by this too. We receive email for our customers and a portion of that is spam (given the nature of email). Google decided out of the blue to mark our attachment S3 bucket as dangerous, because of one malicious file. What's most interesting is that the bucket is private, so the only way they could identify that there is something malicious at a URL is if someone downloads it using Chrome.…

  3. In the space we[1] operate, there's no shortage of competitors. Over the years, I've seen that those who can unlock marketing see a lot more success, even with a shittier product. As a developer-turned-founder, a lot of marketing feels sleazy. Was it always this way? So much link-bait, fluffy posts that are really big ads, shallow content just for SEO, upvoting-rings on platforms, etc. There's so few who seem to put…

  5. Totally feel your pain here. I think a lot of has to do with current JS tech- React, by design, trades off performance for developer efficiency. I'm sensitive to latency.. first thing I do when I setup a new android phone is go into the developer settings and speed up all animations. For our own company [0], we also treat speed as a top feature, though it's not something that's easily to market. It's something that…

  9. You will like this presentation by Jonathan Blow [1], I feel the same. I am in grad school, but since my bachelor, I felt more like a craftsman than a student, I always spend more time in order to make my code 'look' beautiful to me, and be performant. I would like to work somewhere that puts emphasis on writing good software instead of chasing feature after feature. Speaking of which, speed is an oft ignored featur…

  13. For Enchant [0], we followed the "buy don't build" philosophy a lot in the early years. However, the biggest challenge has been reliability. For example, a service provider will have a 5H outage without any clear indication about what's going on or when it will get resolved. This leaves us in a difficult position to raise an incident with an unknown ETA where we can do nothing but wait. Then when it's all resolved,…

  14. We went all-in on Enchant [0] with a set of screen mockups and potential users telling us that it was exactly what they needed. That didn't work out so well. It wasn't what they needed. They didn't buy the product. But we kept talking to those users and understanding what they thought they were getting and the problems they were hoping to solve. Those conversations gave us a better idea of what would work and helped…

  15. When we started building Enchant [0], we used some tech that we understood well and some tech that was new and shiny. Over the years, most of the new and shiny choices eventually caused more pain than we had ever anticipated. We ended up either ripping them out or working around the problems they introduced. But I think "choose boring technology" is not a great guiding light. I've written previously about how to pic…

  17. I work for a company [0] in this space. The fundamental problem is that a lot of customers will reach out on operationally expensive channels (chat, calls) about questions that are easily answered from a FAQ, knowledge base or on the website. In-chat article lookups or AI chat bots with ability to offer some information are trying to divert otherwise unnecessary requests. I do think AI chatbots are part of the futur…

  18. Self-Plug. We use our own product ( http://www.enchant.com ) to support our customers .. It covers email support, a knowledge base website, live chat widget for the marketing site (i.e. sales), and an in-app widget that offers both live chat and an embedded knowledge base. Try it out - it's faster than gmail :)

  19. For our own SaaS[0], we provide a timed trial. But we regularly provide trial extensions because reality of business is that it takes time to get everybody on board and onboarded. Reading this post, I suspect '30 days of use' would result in less 'please extend the trial' emails and would mean less friction during the trial. However, there is a tradeoff: when somebody reaches out for a trial extension, it may be the…

  21. Other than apps I’ve designed for my own use… Enchant is the first thing that comes to mind: https://www.enchant.com/ It’s a ticketing/customer support Web app. A hundred tiny UX decisions make it much more pleasant than similar apps.

  23. We[0] use Ruby without Rails - Sinatra for the most part. I started the codebase over a decade ago now, and at the time Rails felt a little heavy (inline with your comments). That said, Rails does let you get started pretty quickly without needing much of anything else. Rails has more magic. If you prefer less magic, then Sinatra is the way. 0: https://www.enchant.com

  24. We've used https://www.enchant.com/ for about a decade for email support .. it's great, does exactly what is is supposed to and doesn't add a bunch of 'cruft' on top. Had to check our volume, currently over 40,000 tickets in that time. They do live chat too but we've never used that.

  26. At Enchant ( https://enchant.com ): - We launched without billing. Early customers used the product for free until we eventually built out billing - In the early days, the "mailing list" was just a loop that would send an email to signed up customers using our cloud email service provider. - We manually verify all new accounts before they can do certain things. Abuse prevention. - We offer data imports from competit…

  27. We use https://www.enchant.com/ It works great for email support, haven't tried their chat features, but is the sweet-spot for us in terms of features and complexity. They have an API if you want to integrate, though for a web form just feeding it through email works.
