What Hacker News says?
Hashes are generally a part of the signature generation used with certificates. See for example "What role do hashes play in TLS/SSL certificate validation?" -> https://security.stackexchange.com/questions/67512/what-role... In certificates, md5 - and sha1 - was used quite some time after it was known to be weak, I suspect OP was thinking of that. This article seems to give a good summary what happened with sha1, me…

HN discussionThe fault in that case lies entirely with GoDaddy's poor security. Use a competent registrar, preferably one that supports 2FA with a hardware token. https://konklone.com/post/protect-your-domain-name-with-two-...

HN discussionThis is a terrifying story, and I'm very glad Hiroshima wrote it, because I didn't have two factor auth turned on with my domain provider. Now I do! It seems like if he'd had 2FA turned on with GoDaddy, this may not have happened. So rather than use @gmail.com addresses to register for things, as he recommends, just turn on 2FA with your provider. And if your provider doesn't support it, leave them and tell them why…

HN discussionYeah, I disagree with Naoki's conclusion. I'm pretty sure he just didn't have 2FA turned on with GoDaddy (which I understand - I didn't think to turn 2FA on with my provider until I read his story). The admonition to use a @gmail.com address was annoying enough to me that I responded with a blog post: https://konklone.com/post/protect-your-domain-name-with-two-...

HN discussionThere already kinda is TLS on github.io but it's only user<->CDN, CDN<->Github is unencrypted. [ https://konklone.com/post/github-pages-now-sorta-supports-ht... ] And it doesn't work on custom domains (Github can't present a cert for your domain); you can make it "work" via Cloudflare but that only works if Cloudflare doesn't validate Github's cert, which introduces yet another unsecure link. HN discussionSo now github "sorta sorta" [1] supports https: - You CAN force HTTPS for your *.github.io site. - You CAN use an https://yourname.github.io URL. - You CANNOT use a custom domain name with a fully secured HTTPS connection. HN discussionIt's just basic connection integrity -- without HTTPS, there's no guarantee the user is actually getting the content that the site meant to send, and vice versa. Those kind of attacks really do happen, and at scale (e.g. Verizon XUID, or China's Great Cannon). If it's at all interesting, I laid out in detail, with examples, why I've been comfortable taking a very hard line on deprecating HTTP: https://konklone.com/p…

HN discussionThis is great, but it should also be a reminder that SSL is currently not possible for custom domains hosted on GitHub: https://konklone.com/post/github-pages-now-supports-https-so... . I hope a solution materializes eventually.
