Why HN links it

HN readers link Eric Timmons's posts on building static executables with SBCL, a Common Lisp implementation, including a v2 update and an earlier version explaining when static binaries are useful.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 4 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?

  1. ack, thanks. I still want to see what I'm missing, so I'll keep trying. Compilation to binaries works fine. A SBCL binary will weight ±35MB (compressed, 120MB uncompressed). This includes everything (compiler, debugger etc). A bigger app with dozens of deps doesn't grow too fast, like ±40MB for a web app. I think that's in the ballparks of a growing Go app. LispWorks allows to shrink the binary size to ±4MB (but the…

  3. Yeah, you've got a dynamically linked binary. There is a work in progress on SBCL to make it possible to create a really static binaries: https://www.timmons.dev/posts/static-executables-with-sbcl-v... I tried this fork and it worked for me!

  5. The previous version of the article ( https://www.timmons.dev/posts/static-executables-with-sbcl.h... ) explains a few contexts where static binaries are desirable.

  6. For static builds, if you're willing to run a slightly older version of sbcl daewok's work on building and linking sbcl in a musl environment might be solution you're looking for. I've tried to port his patches to more recent versions but there are segfaults due to changes in upstream. https://www.timmons.dev/posts/static-executables-with-sbcl.h... https://www.timmons.dev/posts/static-executables-with-sbcl-v...

  7. Indeed. This patch was working for a previous version of SBCL: https://www.timmons.dev/posts/static-executables-with-sbcl-v... I heard projects (like the Kandria game) build their releases on an old glibc (but latest SBCL and libraries), so it can be shipped to any more recent system.

  8. Other great achievements from last year [0]: - SBCL is callable as a shared library (see sbcl-librarian) - sb-simd - prebuilt binaries for Android (termux, unofficial) - better image compression using zstd - I'll add https://github.com/sionescu/sbcl-goodies , binaries with "goodies" inside (OpenSSL, libfixposix) yay! 9. I was wondering if compiling via Zig would work. Also, thanks for the Guix tip—I will give that a try! I think native dependencies would require something like this (which I believe uses Deploy to solve part of the problem): https://www.timmons.dev/posts/static-executables-with-sbcl.h...
