What Hacker News says?
Can't comment on KDE because I never liked them, but Ubuntu/Gnome has progressed quite nicely since 2005 (my first "Linux year"). In fact my opinion is 180 degree opposite of yours: 2 years ago I switched to OSX and couldn't tolerate how dumb and unusable the UI felt: I waited a year hoping to adjust but surrendered and went back to Gnome. Thinkpad T60 or T61 I love mine, even wrote a little mini-review here: http://kontsevoy.blogspot.com/2007/08/best-notebook-for-linu... Thinkpads are designed for doing actual work - "UltraNav" unit and the keyboard are to die for. They are #1 reason why I picked ThinkPad over Mac. My distant 2nd choice would be MBP, and 3rd - Dell Vostro.

http://kontsevoy.blogspot.com <-- a typical developer's blog. I have an issue with ranting, that's the only thing I constantly want to blog about :-)
