What Hacker News says?
The blog post makes it seem like the problem was in an nginx module. Looking at the docs [1] it looks like that's a C API; as far as I know writing shared libraries in golang for a C caller isn't really a thing (because the runtime needs to exist). Rust might have better luck here (I _think_ there have been attempts to get rust code loaded by not-rust code), but I haven't kept track. [1] https://www.nginx.com/resour…

HN discussionThis motivated me to learn a little bit about nginx architecture. This article is nice: https://www.nginx.com/blog/inside-nginx-how-we-designed-for-... Why are the nginx workers implemented as processes sharing memory, rather than threads? Is that so they can have different privileges in the Linux permissions/ownership model? Is it easy to create multiple processes sharing memory in Linux? How do I go about doing th…

HN discussion> On the other hand, the unreadable weird-ass pseudo-XML configuration files If I have one gripe about NGINX it's that its configuration is a still-half-baked DSL that has quirks you wouldn't expect and when they error you don't get great feedback. Examples: You can have an if clause, but no else attached. You can't have an if clause with multiple conditions. Finally, "if [might be] evil." 1 You end up writing a bun…

HN discussionOne of the most heavily used Russian software projects on the internet https://www.nginx.com/blog/do-svidaniya-igor-thank-you-for-n... but it's only marginally more modern than Apache httpd. In light of recently announced nginx memory-safety vulnerabilities I'd suggest migrating to Caddy https://caddyserver.com/

HN discussionThey are not charging me for storage, they are putting ads on my videos with no way to opt-out. Ads of the like that I have _NO_ desire to be affiliated with, ads for pollutants like "weed killers" and "insecticides". I don't care if they use fancy algorithms for transcoding (CPU cycles) or bandwidth costs, or storage, that was the deal. I ship to them and they host it without ads. I did this for the "promise" of ne…

HN discussionUltimately it depends on your use case and how much tuning/schema design/explicit management you are willing to do. My team lead did a talk at NGINX Conf 2017 which touched on how we tuned Postgres to handle 1 Billion metrics per day for NGINX Amplify ( https://www.nginx.com/products/nginx-amplify/ ). I would link it, but it seems it hasn't been published by our Conf team yet. We did this on 9.4 so the changes outli…

HN discussionIt's not as impossible as it sounds. There are many JS engines which are extremely small compared to the big guys used in browsers. Most of them tend to grab a subset of the language and implement that. For example, the creators of nginx created their own specialized engine called nginScript that runs JS for their stuff https://www.nginx.com/resources/wiki/nginScript/ There is even a javascript interpreter written i…

HN discussionAsync sendfile is also an advantage for FreeBSD. It is specific to FreeBSD. It allows an nginx worker to send from a file that's cold on disk without blocking, and without resorting to threadpools using a thread-per-file. The gist is that the sendfile() call stages the pages waiting to be read in the socket buffer, and marks the mbufs with M_NOTREADY (so they cannot be sent by TCP). When the disk read completes, a s…

HN discussionI'm having a hard time seeing what niche this fills. It seems to be both a process manager and TCP proxy. What am I missing here? What makes this better than, for example, using docker-compose? I think a "how it works" or "design doc" would be really helpful. That said, the source files do make for pleasant reading. The nginx team has always set a strong example for what good C programming looks like. EDIT: Their bl…
