What Hacker News says?
'open' is on of the things I long for most as a Linux user. There are several ways to achieve something that are all inferior or downright broken. Usually you don't have a huge problem, until you have. xdg-open for example could've solved this, if it was universally working. I wrote related rant once[0] when I tried to debug an issue of a misconfigured default browser. [0]: http://f5n.org/blog/2013/default-browser-l…

HN discussionSurely you mean "What should you be working on?" Too many projects, nothing is ever finished :( I envy the people who a) have some creative ideas and b) manage to ship them. More than once an offhand remark of "wouldn't it be nice if we had X" made me write the damn thing in a much better way than I could have ever described a project of mine. Maybe that's also the reason I'll probably never start a company again (a…

HN discussionI did 20 languages last year and I'm gonna stick to 1-2 this year :P Wasn't exactly stressful, but it didn't help being quick and having nice solutions. Wrote a summary: https://f5n.org/blog/2019/advent-of-code-2019/

HN discussionI don't know, I'd definitely call myself a mech keyboard fan, but not a zealot. The one I'm typing on right now I've had since 2013 (changing key caps once in a while) and as I'm working from home, my private other one is close by. I do have a few more (I think 3 others? [0]), but I've not found something to replace my daily driver and I'm not actively searchign. I'm not completely averse to building one at some poi…

HN discussionJust depends how many links. I did this for a couple years at https://f5n.org/stack/ and weekly sometimes felt like too many links already.

HN discussionA bit of context, because your post could easily be taken in bad faith: > Ideally a multi-purpose tool like leiningen should be built on top of those simple parts tools.build is 2 weeks old according to the announcement. Leiningen is nearly 12 years old. I haven't looked into tools.build, so not arguing for or against it. Disclaimer: Have been doing some work on leiningen from time to time. Also I first ran into Clo…

HN discussionYou can run both in parallel, I wrote about it a while ago - https://f5n.org/blog/2018/i3-kde5-plasma/ - and actually drafted a post about whether I'm happy with that choice (TLDR: very happy, but not sure I need KDE at all).

on “Xubuntu 19.04: The Exhaustive Update”I used to do this for a few years: https://f5n.org/stack - but my interests have shifted a little and not too many people gave any feedback or indication that they read it. These days I just save them to Pinboard, like I used to, and sometimes go back and find something I vaguely remember...

on “Ask HN: Show Us Your Personal Website/Blog?”The idea is hardly unique, what matters more is that you have to somehow agree to the choice of content presented by the author of the summary in question. I'm doing one of these myself for a few months, over at http://f5n.org/stack/ (and it consists at least 50% of HN content, so I didn't post it here as of yet.) As I've also written somewhere my inspirations were http://www.foldl.org/ and http://chneukirchen.org/t…

on “Show HN: Coder Weekly”There are dozens of us who went through the ordeal to use MIDI controllers for stuff because you just want to touch a button and not alt-tab 4 times. cf. https://f5n.org/blog/2026/hardware-mute-button/ (part 2 is not published yet where I replace the Korg software with my own app using a Rust midi driver) But yes, mine was 55 EUR, is universally usable, and it was a fun project. There is a reason I didn't buy a stre…

on “Codex Micro”Because of stuff like this: https://f5n.org/blog/2021/dell-latitude-5130/ And I've heard the same stories from people with XPS. Same widespread coil whine, probably the same weird docking stations.

on “Ask HN: A good Linux laptop below 1000€”Maybe you'll find something useful in this post: http://f5n.org/blog/2016/tools-windows-2016/ - it's the stuff I use to not tear my hair out when I need to get something other than gaming done. I think it's missing VS Code, which was a pleasant surprise.

on “Ask HN: Must do's and must know's when switching to Windows?”Interestingly, email breaks this type of content for me. Whenever I subscribe to any "digest" in email form it piles up and sits unread in my inbox (well, in a subfolder, but still clearly visible until I "mark as read" without reading it). Maybe sometimes it's because it's just too long and hardly anyone manages to post enough interesting links (for me, on a regular basis) that I find the time to click through them…

on “Engigogo Digest – A weekly newsletter of links and product suggestions”I've been running a hobby project on their free tier for a while and it's mostly cool. Wrote up some stuff back then: https://f5n.org/blog/2022/trying-out-some-hosting-options/ but unfortunately none of my pain points/caveats seem to have been fixed * deploying (re)builds your container but doesn't even tag it locally, so if you just built one, it will build the exact same one again and on the other hand you are lef…

on “Migrating from AWS to Fly.io”Nice, I only managed to do 20 (of the same goal, 25 languages) in 2019: https://f5n.org/blog/2019/advent-of-code-2019/ > Tactic: Do translation more than optimization This rings especially true - "you can write Java in any language", or whatever sort of language shaped your thinking. Even after years of using different languages my prototyping code is often inherently imperative and I have to actively rewrite it to…

on “26 programming languages in 25 days, Part 2: Reflections on language design”Migrated 3.5y ago - https://f5n.org/blog/2022/switching-to-nextgen/ after getting fed up with having to do a migration. At that time it was "make my hugo setup run, and remove 90% of the features I don't need" - but I couldn't tell you how much I have diverged, it's really not a lot of code (or dependencies, but I did not reimplement the hard parts, e.g. markdown and templating)
