HN discussionFor those with old ppc Macs, there is a port of FF4 Final at http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/ Works great for me and is way faster than Safari 5.04 on a iMac G5 and a Powerbook G4 (10.5.8 in both).

HN discussionThis may be helpful [1]. It's not exactly modern but far more up-to-date than IE and NS. Last updated 2014 I think [2]. [1]. https://www.floodgap.com/software/classilla/ [2]. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classilla

HN discussionYeah, bitlbee rocks, I use it under an i386 OpenBSD netbook (Atom CPU), it's much faster than Pidgin. Also, I use m68.news everywhere, as it can be read with no issues. Lynx on Gopher protocol will work "as is" for Mac OS 7 I guess, and it's very fast. 68k.news it's over HTTP and not HTTPS, so it will work as is too. This is the most recent version http://www.floodgap.com/retrotech/mac/lynx/download.html The interfa…

HN discussionQ: What happened to Pidgin? A: Google & Facebook shut down their XMPP gateways to force you into their apps. All the sudden you can no longer use Pidgin to communicate with people on google & facebook. At least that was my experience. I used to use Pidgin with OTR[0] for e2e encrypted chat over google & facebook. It was pretty fantastic, messages were inaccessible to facebook and google even with a court order so I…

HN discussionThis site is specifically targeted to software engineers, so it's a reasonable assumption that we can talk about the relevant topics without having to simplify things for people outside that group. For a reverse proxy, you would want a computer capable of the encryption methods the modern web's security standards demand and to install a web server on it which you can access from the older computer. The server comput…

HN discussionThat is what the Apple/NeXT combined company did, of course. Rhapsody showed it well. http://toastytech.com/guis/rhap.html And there's some description of the emulation nanokernel: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_nanokernel But in its way OS X was much more of a clean break: a whole new OS, ported to the old hardware, tweaked to understand filesystems and file formats and given a shallow cosmetic resemblance. A…

HN discussionSnow Leopard was tongue in cheek as it comes up among OSX fans as the best OS made. To your point, there are plenty newer MacOS versions that might still suit ones taste, still run 32 bit apps, and still get patched. There are plenty alternatives to surfing Safari. Heck, you can even get modern Firefox compiled for Power Macintosh G3, G4, or G5 (not for Lion 10.7 or newer, which dropped Power Mac support): https://w…

on “Introducing T: A command-line power tool for Twitter”Yes, it is what I am using. It is called TenFourFox http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/ . New functionality allows you to create "FoxBoxes" which are like separate containers for a single site; this allows you to both keep some sites separate, and, ensure that when you close the site, all the RAM is reclaimed immediately by the OS.
