Called a flow graph beautiful, a logo graphic a favourite, and the tutorials page the best source offhand

  3. Sure, media reporting is biased towards things that are sensationalist. At the same time, total death factors are not that interesting. Everyone of us will die one day, and it might be assigned to various organs failing first. What matters more is causes of death as a function of age: https://flowingdata.com/mortality/

  5. >the prior number ignores the cumulative probability that you have died as a <50 yr old during all years prior to 2016 Ah you're right about that. Looks like I'm probably way off. This random thing google turned up [0] says that a 25 y/o male has like a ~70% chance to make it to 50! >Given that all of us will die Something doesn't feel right about this, but I can't figure out what. I'll let it simmer and assume you'…

  7. This is a spitball take, but I'm trying it out because I'm more interested in learning how it plays out than actually making a point. Socialization is moving at a slower pace than the shift in economics. The trade deficit starting in the 1970s has overwhelmingly affected goods [1], resulting in the exporting of goods production overseas and leaving the US with a service-based economy[2]. The US at the time had a gre…

  13. Not apparent in the original chart, but in the follow-on bubble chart there seems to be a weirdly strong connection between fire inspectors and pumping station operators. https://flowingdata.com/2017/08/28/occupation-matchmaker/ They both seem like very small groups, though, so probably just an amusing bit of statistical noise.

  15. > This study captures P(running into a profession) x P(preference for that profession). I would love to them model P(running into a profession), so that we could get the much juicer preferences of each group for various professions. The page links to a different visualization of the same data, [0] which attempts to control for the prevalence of a job within the population. Maybe it doesn't go far enough for you but…

  17. >Who are you, human, to pretend you are able to measure yourself?! A lot of people do not in fact know how to measure themselves properly for clothes (many people measure the wrong part of their body for the "waist"). Perhaps even more people think they're a certain size, but have never actually measured themselves, they just go by the measurements on clothes they already own, which are frequently "vanity sized" to…

  19. Here's a cite: https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/psychological-medici... Of course it's not the only thing, and can be greatly mediated by other factors. 23. I miss the old WeatherSpark visualization of past conditions and the future forecast. They had a wonderful graph of various weather parameters in a nice slippy zoom interface that made it easy to visualize the forecast. It was built in Flash and they decided that a HTML version wasn't viable due to declining ad revenue. Some appreciation and screenshots of the old version: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/sad-day-weat…
