Why HN links it

HN readers link Larry Bank's blog for posts on SIMD and optimization on the ESP32-S3 microcontroller, including its Xtensa instructions and compiler overflow behaviour. Comments point to these posts as references.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 6 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

I optimize software for a living. This blog is to share some personal projects which others may find interesting.

  3. I think the reason that signed integer overflow is undefined is that it wasn't uncommon at the time to have architectures that didn't represent signed integers with 2's complement. Even today you may find issues with signed integers. The ESP32 vector extensions seem to saturate signed integer overflow [1]. [1]: https://bitbanksoftware.blogspot.com/2024/01/surprise-esp32-...

  5. Interesting. Since this was implemented on the S3, which uses the ISA XTensa LX instead of the RISC-V of most newer ESP32 series chips, I looked into how Espressif is handling SIMD on the latter ISA. Apparently it is only present in limited fashion as a processor extension on the P4 and S31 [0]. The S31 datasheet claims SIMD [1] and the P4 datasheet [2] files them as "Processor Instruction Extensions." 0. https://bi…
