  1. There are companies out there working on swabs. e.g. Formlabs designed an autoclavable, 3D-printed nasopharyngeal swab using biocompatible Dental resin, in concert with local hospitals. They received FDA Class 1 Exempt status from the CDC and are printing some 150K per day. https://formlabs.com/covid-19-response/covid-test-swabs/ https://www.plasticstoday.com/medical/formlabs-3d-printing-m... https://formlabs.com/co…

  13. https://formlabs.com/blog/inside-production-robot-hand/ is from almost a decade ago, but yeah - print a mold, stick electronics in slots in the mold, pump silicone around it. Back then it was sort of novel that commercial-grade resin printers could produce smooth enough surfaces for this; I expect that today, hobbyist-grade ones probably suffice.

The issue is that while you can print 3d lenses (fun read: https://formlabs.com/blog/creating-camera-lenses-with-stereo... ), it's just not practical unless you're super into the project (similar for telescope makers who grind their own lenses). The long and short of it is that high quality glass is an industrial process that has hundreds of years of refinement to give you excellent image quality at very low prices.…

  23. If by "lens" you mean the glass optics, that was not printed - they purchased it from Surplus Shed. Here's a 3D printed camera with a lens that really was 3D printed and polished: https://formlabs.com/blog/creating-camera-lenses-with-stereo...

  25. Yes, SLA printers like the Form 2 do offer better print resolutions than FDM printers of a similar price. http://formlabs.com/products/3d-printers/form-2/ The downside is they can't work with as wide a range of materials compared to FDM printers, and the materials they can work with tend to be more expensive.

  27. The support structure may be overdesigned, but that's OK. What bothers me is how the cart attaches to the track. Here's a view of that: http://formlabs.com/en/company/blog/2014/08/27/from-3d-print... The retention wheels are just riding on the underside of the plywood sheets. If they had a jam at a track joint, those might tear through the plywood or break off, allowing the car to derail and fall off the track. Unsu…
