  3. The referrer header is indeed a reality of HTTP, but that doesn't mean we can't and shouldn't work around that reality and correct for it, if it has real privacy implications, which I think it definitely does. By getting rid of that header I think we take away a lot of private context, i.e. the actual search terms that landed you on that page, which in and of themselves can provide a lot of background into what was…

  5. I agree, and it's also a direction that I'm personally headed (currently focused on freelancing/bootstrapping), but I also think it has more to do with the current recession more than anything. It's a really tough environment now and I think a lot of the innovation over the next few years is actually going to come from the big tech companies. Some of the best startup advice you'll ever get is by @yegg in "Paths to $…

  9. Here ya go: http://www.gabrielweinberg.com/blog/2011/12/duckduckgo-used-... Tip from experience: Really think about logistics before diving in. Racks (even quarter racks) are heavy!! Data center equipment is also noisy. You eventually also hit limits on household electric circuits. It is fun though :)

  15. Why would he? He has no advertising to use it for. He doesn't want the government to be able to subpoena him. (They can't ask for information he doesn't have.) And it would pretty much kill the business he's been building for 3 years if it came out that he was logging information that he's been loudly claiming that he doesn't. He also wrote a blog post on how to change nginx's defaults to not log IP and user agent:…

This takes almost no maintenance, though I am starting to work on improving it in response to student feedback. My other course, Productivity for Mac U…
