Gary Gale's personal blog at vicchi.org covers data and programming. Since 2013, 3 different Hacker News readers have linked it 3 times. It is still writing: the last post was on 2026-08-19, and you can follow it by feed.
Too few sampled comments (1) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
HN readers link Gary Gale's post on geospatial indexing with Hilbert curves. The only comment describes the commenter's own experience adapting geometry algorithms to geospatial coordinates, including problems near the poles.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 1 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.
What Hacker News says?
I spent some time doing adapting some geometry algorithms to work with geospatial coordinates a few years ago. The problem with the poles is that latitude converges to 90 degrees whereas longitude degrees are all over the place if you move even slightly. This combined with precision issues with floating point math causes all sorts of issues. A good example is a simple algorithm I did to draw circles on a map by turn…
