Why HN links it

HN commenters link Geet Duggal's posts on speeding up Python with PyPy and on the Nim (formerly Nimrod) language, in threads about Python performance and language choice.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 5 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?

  1. I couldn't sacrifice performance (lots of number crunching was involved with costs tight), so, I couldn't pick Python. PyPy, Cython or Shed Skin might have been answers to those number crunching problems. I'd love to learn whether they would be sufficient for OP's performance requirements. Some benchmarks look promising, for instance this one published in late 2010: http://geetduggal.wordpress.com/2010/11/25/speed-u…

  3. " http://geetduggal.wordpress.com/2010/11/25/speed-up-your-pyt... . lists an example where PyPy is in fact faster than C++ with STL. Not sure how it would compare to well-optimized C, but remember that JIT warmup time will hurt you for short lived jobs." But note a little further down the page. In the hands of a C++ coder (or indeed Cython coder) things look very different.

  4. * Yes...I have already seen it for some "build your own language interpreter" examples. Not sure about the documentation quality. * http://geetduggal.wordpress.com/2010/11/25/speed-up-your-pyt... lists an example where PyPy is in fact faster than C++ with STL. 5. I really dislike this policy when applied to programming languages. Things from pop culture are going to be referred to pervasively in the media and blogosphere, but programming languages don't get there without massive marketing pushes, press releases, etc. That doesn't mean a language is not itself notable. Anyway, there's plenty about Nim that is not primary: http://goran.krampe.se/2014/10/13/here-comes-nim/ http…
