What Hacker News says?

  1. If meat is so carcinogenic, why was cancer so uncommon until the last century or so? We are not eating any more meat now than we did a hundred years ago, yet cancer incidence is skyrocketing. So, why do we believe that meat causes cancer? There have been numerous research studies claiming to tie red meat to cancer (particularly colon cancer), however, these were weak epidemiological studies, and are not representati…

  7. This is also untrue. You can live in perfect health on fat and protein alone. Humans can’t make the essential amino acids necessary for making some proteins so we need to eat protein, and there are a number of vitamins that are fat/oil but not water soluble so we need at least some fat but a no carbohydrate diet with sufficient fat is fine as long as you get enough fat. If you only eat lean meat that will be bad for…

WHO has been wrong for example in regards to meat and cancer: http://www.diagnosisdiet.com/meat-and-cancer/ When you get right down to it, the only plausible evidence to suggest that red meat might be risky to human colon health is contained in two, that’s TWO, human studies, both of which were very small and poorly designed, and therefore unable to give us useful i…

  12. > Humans [can] obtain all essential nutrients on an entirely plant-based diet You need supplementation on a vegan diet for a reason. Entirely plant-based diets are not nutritionally complete. There is vastly more than B12 at stake with vegan diets. https://www.diagnosisdiet.com/micronutrients-mental-health/ Almost by definition it would be weird if vegan diets were not diets full of deficiencies, since they do not partake in wide amounts of food groups eaten for at least millenia. (And we have no record of any vegan societies, though a few vegetarian -ish ones.)

  17. > plant based protein sources are [...] worse than mass-agriculture raised animal products. Plant-based protein is no better, from the health and nutrition context, than animal-based protein. They can even be worse; for example, plant nutrients often suffer from low “bioavailability”—which means that they are hard for us to extract, absorb, and utilize[1]. Add fat -> cancer; add more sugar -> cancer...; add more protein -> cancer Epidemiological stuff is flawed as well. She supports the keto-diet, which has no real basis in history or science, the person she cites actively disagrees with her dietary suggestions. I concede that conventional wisdom and knowledge is that vegetables, across the board, are healthy and that meat is classified as carnciogenic by renowned national and international institutions.
