To extend your analogy, the players on the field only have so much they can do--Trump included. Might be worth asking who is in the owner's box, who is betting on the game, and why are we in the stands cheering so aggressively for either side in the first place. With Trump out in January, I hope more people are critical and skeptical of the various institutions in our country that wield the actual power. For a more…

  3. Did the president merely tap into this simmering sentiment, or did he inflame it? Recently, Glenn Greenwald wrote about the reluctance of large news organizations to even mention the Hunter Biden laptop story. https://greenwald.substack.com/p/my-resignation-from-the-int... As someone who sees this story as hard to believe for a number of reasons, the broad resolve among large news organization to avoid that story ra…

  5. It's crazy to me that people _still_ don't know that it's been confirmed by a "reliable" news source. The veracity of the NY Post story wasn't controversial, just the effect it would have on getting Biden into the White House. The corporate press ran cover for the Biden family to get the outcome they wanted in the 2020 elections. https://greenwald.substack.com/p/the-nyt-now-admits-the-bide...

  7. The ACLU has had a bit of a paradigm shift recently, from "defend any speech" to "defend any speech we do not think is abhorrent". That's not necessarily a bad change, or a good change, depending on where you stand. I am just wanting to point out that the ACLU isn't necessarily "remaining", more "reinventing" these days. Here is a fresh Glenn Greenwald writeup on it (which is just one opinion, of course): https://gr…

  19. I thought Peter Maas email (that Greenwald posted) asking him for edits was very good. https://greenwald.substack.com/p/emails-with-intercept-edito... Greenwald’s piece has some good points about lazy and biased journalism on the Hunter Biden story, but goes off the rails when he misrepresents what actually happened with Joe Biden firing the Ukraine prosecutor.

  25. My conclusion is making sense of both of these. Why didn't I believe Greenwald initially? Well, I have had the dubious pleasure of seeing many people behave badly and then play the morally-outraged victim to try to legitimize it. There's a particular way they write and talk, and Greenwald's description of events reeked of it. The Intercept's response made a few jabs but it didn't level any particular wild accusation…
