Why HN links it

HN readers link Suneel Pillai's blog mostly for its org-chart meme and older programming and tech-history posts, such as FizzBuzz, Laws of Software Development and early Forth and retro computing material. The comments cite it rather than praise the writing.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 40 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

  5. Microsoft is a fractal of infighting and groups at war with each other. Cloud Services are cool, and Windows are the weird ones. But within Windows there's the kernel team who are cool and customer-focused, and the User layer as the weird ones. Go another level deeper and you have fights between C++ and .Net, or historically the crusade for COM+. Or the transition to UWP, which clearly at most half the Windows UI te…

  7. Moore's Law (on a single CPU core) effectively ended around 2009. Our programming idioms for parallel processing are still so crude, hardly anyone can write maintainable parallelized code for anything but toy problems. Until we can restart Moore's Law again, this is all academic. http://www.globalnerdy.com/2007/09/07/multicore-musings/

AIUI it's some weird legal sleight of hand where they don't (and can't) actually own the Tetris gameplay mechanics, but they have successfully argued in court that the appearance of the game constitutes their trade dress, and in practice you can't really implement the Tetris mechanics without the result looking like Tetris.
