HN discussionOK, you don't build a complete project, but it's a similar approach: Think Stats: Probability and Statistics for Programmers http://greenteapress.com/thinkstats/ Here, you learn statistics by implementing statistics functions in Python along the way and use them to solve the questions in the book.

HN discussionHi! As a member of the Python community, could you please pick a better textbook than Dive into Python? Think Python is a far better book, off the top of my head, but nearly anything's better than DiP for people not acquainted with the language. ( http://greenteapress.com/thinkpython/ )

HN discussionLove Think Python, I have recommended it to so many learners: it balances the various concerns of a new programmer book really well. Allen Downey has a bunch of other books with somewhat similar approaches too https://greenteapress.com/wp/ -- some I do think he might have gone too far in the low-rigor side, but all the ones I've reviewed have been pretty good. (I was sharing a table at a conference with Allen some t…

HN discussionI love these books … in my case Think Perl6 (now Think Raku) was a real eye opener. A quick scan of the new Python 3rd edition looks like it is quite dumbed down - which is probably appropriate for Python. I highly recommend the intro to Functional Programming in Raku (chapter 14). https://greenteapress.com/wp/think-perl-6/

HN discussionHere's a good "play with turtles" chapter in an online textbook if anyone is interested: http://www.greenteapress.com/thinkpython/html/book005.html Did porting your project to github mess up the formatting, or did you actually use 8-space tabs?! Because I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

HN discussionI studied probability during my undergrad (and high school) using dice, coins and other such things. It made sense to me but there was a dark area in my understanding. It felt like a blind spot and I could never get into it. In the final year of engineering, we had someone do a quick refresher on probability as a prelude to a longer course on pattern recognition and he described the whole thing using set theory (Ven…

HN discussionHi, I'm 30 and trying to relearn the math courses I did in college (Computer Science degree) and more. I am currently using Standford & MIT's open couseware. I feel like I am moving slower than I would if I were in a course but able to grasp the material better at this rate... I made good grades in my math courses but like you, I didn't have to use them in software engineering that much. I would like to get into a f…
