Too few sampled comments (3) to say how often HN recommends it.?

Why HN links it

Linked for posts on self-hosting and dropping a VPS, and for a write-up on switching from Node.js to Go. Commenters cite these posts as sources or contrasts rather than praising them.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 3 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

  5. About six years ago I wrote about the perils of using Facebook as your primary photo store (among other things) - http://greenash.net.au/thoughts/2011/10/dont-trust-facebook-... . Sad to see that so few people have followed my advice, that a tool such as this is necessary.

Node's javascript engine v8 can only run in one thread, if you want to access it from a different thread you need to take a lock (for example in Chrome / Chromium you need to take an isolate lock; each page runs it's own isolated v8 engine (read only code pages are shared, all other javascript pages (data plus read/write code pages) are private); in this sense it is very similar to the GIL in Python. So although nod…

  9. Fascinating, I had never heard of this wall before. There are also numerous impressive and under-explored archaeological sites north east of Golestan, in modern day Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, see this overview of them that I wrote a few years ago: https://greenash.net.au/thoughts/2014/10/forgotten-realms-of...

  13. I did a somewhat similar bit of historical story-telling a few years ago: https://greenash.net.au/thoughts/2013/04/money-the-ongoing-e... And came to pretty similar conclusions, in particular, that modern fiat money is quite worthless!

  15. Makes me think that this article I wrote on my blog several years ago is more pertinent than ever: http://greenash.net.au/thoughts/2010/08/boycott-gps/ Seriously, folks. Turn off the GPS, and start observing the world around you. And if you really do need route navigation, do it the old-fashioned way: study a map! (Printed or online, doesn't matter).

  17. I thought about the similarities between law and computer code several years back - see http://greenash.net.au/thoughts/2008/08/legislation-and-prog... Nice to see that Stephen Wolfram goes into much more depth than I do, about what would be required for this to happen. He's also more optimistic than I am!
