What Hacker News says?
> macOS can't use Touch ID from a cold boot Isn't that because the Secure Enclave (the only place which contains the Touch ID biometric data) is locked by your password? "When a user's password is set up on an Apple Silicon Mac, the password is passed through a one-way hashing algorithm that produces a key used to encrypt the Secure enclave's key."[0] [0] https://blog.greggant.com/posts/2023/04/14/the-security-encl.…

HN discussionpeople really think bumpgate was about some issue that also affected AMD too and not closing the door on NVIDIA building a platform inside Apple's platform and shifting the balance of power? you've been reading way too much semiaccurate lol https://blog.greggant.com/posts/2021/10/13/apple-vs-nvidia-w... like, we have the benefit of a decade of retrospect and watched nvidia do exactly the thing that apple refuses to…

HN discussionSays who, Charlie demerjian and circa-2010 AMD fanboys echoing him? Things like Bumpgate as a major social media mindshare thing largely stem from him and his coverage. And he leaves off the part where AMD gpus were failing too (because of the same RoHS-compliant solder) and where apple kinda wanted to part ways anyway because they saw the “platform” nvidia was building and didn’t want any part of it on macOS… game…

HN discussion> The US has Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, X, all of which innovate to offer products appealing enough that customers are willing to use or buy them in a free and consensual transaction (which does not require any impoverishment). If they fail at innovating to appeal to customers, they go bankrupt. I make iPhone apps. No Apple software update has appealed to me since back when they were still named after cats. In…

HN discussionSteam sales are abysmal on Mac, so it's a decentproxy I think. I couldn't find a nice cut report on gaming PC sales vs standard desktops, whichi is unfortunate as the PC market in general is on a downtrend while my hunch is gaming is probably flat or rising. On Apple and gaming...they've been on the cold with Steam, basically refusing any improvement that would help. They've Epic at their throat. They've faught Micr…

HN discussion> Then there's Apple's drama, which involved warranty claims for laptop parts that led to them being AMD only until the Arm move ( https://blog.greggant.com/posts/2021/10/13/apple-vs-nvidia-w ...) It’s second-hand info so take it with a grain of salt, but I read somewhere that there was a lot of friction between Apple and Nvidia because Apple likes to tweak and tailor drivers per model of Mac and generally not be wh…

HN discussionCurious, was that laptop running with nvidia? Because the reason Apple really dislikes nvidia was because nvidia sort of lied about the thermal spec (much like intel does, except intel could downclock); and it caused a lot of GPUs to kill their motherboards: https://blog.greggant.com/posts/2021/10/13/apple-vs-nvidia-w...

HN discussionNvidia sold defective GPU's that affected every 2007-2008 MacBook Pro. It was a manufacturing defect and every chip was guaranteed to fail. It was a bad look for Apple that cost them millions having to replace logic boards. The defect wasn't corrected for several years leading to some people having multiple logic board replacements. https://blog.greggant.com/posts/2021/10/13/apple-vs-nvidia-w...

HN discussionI think they were dipping a little deep in the pool for "rare" machines toward the end. I'm literally writing this comment on a trashcan Mac that I paid $400 for less than a year ago. One interesting fact regarding that price though is that until Apple officially stopped supporting it with new OSX releases, you'd probably have had to have paid at least $1000-1500 for the same machine. It's a solid machine (I got min…

I dual-booted Mojave on 2 Wintel machines back during the Clover bootloader days, I could only tolerate it for ~2 weeks before giving up.
