What Hacker News says?
Last month, my friend's HP Laserjet Pro printer started flashing "SUPPLY PROBLEM" error message and wouldn't print anything. Apparently, all he did was update the firmware after a message popped up on the printer urging him to do so. Well, that firmware update included new DRM checks for non-HP toners. The printer would just refuse to work with 3rd party toner cartridges. I had to help him and had to find an old fir…

HN discussion> Especially, as Windows updates, given basically infinite combination of hardware (often broken) and software (broken even more often) are super rock solid. Apart from breaking SSDs [0] less than two weeks ago. And deleting your certificates in November [3]. And breaking Kerberos in November [4]. And moving your files to another user in February [1]. And breaking their own reset feature in February [2]. All of thos…

HN discussionIt's hit and miss. They have one of the largest cyber security operations worldwide and regularly track and dismantle criminal operations. There's some great people working there. Then there's Azure. Which is used by large organizations and you would expect it to have the utmost care when it comes to security. But it often does badly, in several instances it allowed different tenants to access information from one a…

HN discussionNot the first of such stories either: https://borncity.com/win/2020/08/16/microsoft-kontensperrung... This is why I explicitly make on-site backups of anything that's in the cloud and don't store my passwords with Apple. If they suddenly decided I had CSAM for some reason, I'd be locked out of everything.

HN discussionWell, I don't think this build quality is solid [1]. With OpenWrt you have more freedom than FritzBox. But the UI is pretty idiot-proof indeed. [1] https://borncity.com/win/2024/07/20/fritzbox-7590-router-the...

HN discussion> Every step towards "encrypt all the things" increases the cost of that interception. That's not the case at all, and a very dangerous idea. Some steps drive increased centralization. Increased centralization makes interception and filtering easier. The better solution is to push domain authentication to after the secure channel is established. That doesn't protect against active MITM snoopers, but neither does TLS…

HN discussionThere have been a lot of leaks over the years. W2K and NT4 got leaked in 2004, XP in 2020 [1], and that's just the publicly known leaks where stuff ended on the 'chan boards or torrent sites. It's more than likely that there have been more leaks (e.g. from one of the academia or government audit programs) that have never been widely dispersed. And yet, both WINE and ReactOS have refused to use the leaks; ReactOS doe…

HN discussion> I looked at the USB 3 spec and couldn't find any guarantee that there was any number of devices you could plug into hubs and have it work. It's a controller and/or BIOS limitation[1][2]. The complication is that while USB devices can be addressed using 7 bits = 127 devices total, each device usually creates more than one endpoint, and each endpoint consumes controller and system memory resources. The BIOS allocate…

HN discussionYou can enable experimental support for TLS 1.3 on Internet Explorer for Windows 10 (not for older Windows) in the advanced options tab. You should also disable third party add-ons and enable enhanced protected mode. If you also disable jscript.dll[1] you will get all the benefits of the IE shell that was posted here without having to download anything. HN discussionWhen I hear 7zip I associate it with security vulnerabilities. I remember reading a couple of articles last year that said 7zip was maintained and distributed by a single person with not-stellar security practices, and most mirrors online are hosting old, insecure versions. Therefore I wouldn't recommend it to anyone that doesn't "know what they're doing" wrt security. source: https://borncity.com/win/2018/02/21/sec…
