What Hacker News says?

  1. Funny, the stadiacountdown.com counter had actually been over-optimistic, by almost a full year, saying there are 414 days left (extrapolated based on [0]), but with the new announcement of a shutdown date of January 18, 2023, there are only 111 days to go. May it rest in peace. As for whether Google should be taking bets that they might not be able to support, I'm actually very much against this. I would suggest th…

  3. > This may be rooted in how designers are taught or simply in how they now practice No course or degree on interaction design - free online to ivy leagues across the world - teaches 'design for aesthetics' and neither do designers in design departments of startups or of big corporates have design sprints where designs are shortlisted because one is more beautiful than others. 5. ASML is a holding though, it has many subisidiaries and sub-companies, including one that makes photolithography equipment. Google is a search engine but there's also Google Ventures that does investments [0] into loads of different companies. I'm really not sure why (in all these threads) people try to put Europe's biggest tech company into a single box when most big companies aren't. [0] https://www.gv.com/portfol…

  7. So far a few: 1) Don't spend money and time on things you don't need or will need earliest in a few months from now. 2) Regardless if you have a brand-new idea for a product or try to improve an existing product/process, you need to validate first that you follow the right path. I think a light-weight solution like the idea behing the Design Sprint ( http://www.gv.com/sprint/ ) is a good option. Don't go off and try…

  9. "In contact with large, established organisations this book tends to produce cargo cults. Simplistic management self-help literature combined with institutional mediocrity, stupidity, fear of change, and hard-shelled delusion is a horrible mix." This has been my experience as well with lean in the enterprise SaaS world. We are currently toying with "design sprints" from Google [1] which is basically a faster version…

  11. I used to work for Google and did a ton of interviews for roles where I was the hiring manager, as well as others. One of the more painful things that I came across regularly was that we often had multiple great people go through the full interview process for a role, but could only hire one. Often 2-3 candidates could have done the job brilliantly, but we could only choose one. In that case, it tends to be really s…

  13. Forgive if I am misunderstanding, but Google Ventures invested in Uber, not Google itself. Wouldn't this statement from the article be half incorrect: "This puts Google squarely in competition with Uber, which is both an investment and customer of its Google Maps product." 1. https://www.gv.com/about 2. https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/uber/funding-rounds

  25. And you didn't even mention GV, CapitalG and other investment arms. Well forget the others, I am surprised that Google's investments into Oscar, Magic Leap, SpaceX, Impossible, Slack, Stripe,Lyft,Uber, Snap, AirBnb aren't talked about much. I think these can be counted as successful, guaranteed future cash troves. In 10 years, all these are going to be worth a lot. Google should hold onto these. It's like a mini Ber…

  27. I think the usual approach with these 'sprint' methodologies is to use software like InVision, Figma, etc. to mock-up a prototype. No sense coding before you've got proof positive that users will care, the thinking goes. See: http://www.gv.com/sprint/
