Personal blog · higherlogics.blogspot.comprogramming
Higher Logics is a personal blog at higherlogics.blogspot.com about programming. Since 2008, 10 different Hacker News readers have linked it 22 times, most often “Embedded Stack Language for .NET”. The last post was in 2022, but the archive is still widely read.
Too few sampled comments (1) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
Posts on designing a stackless coroutine in C that keeps local variables, and on an asynchronous library built on it. The one comment discusses the design's missing executor, not the writing.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 1 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?
There's sort of a middle ground between event sourcing and ordinary mutable entities: versioned entities. http://higherlogics.blogspot.com/2015/10/versioning-domain-e... The particular schema described there isn't suitable for highly concurrent entities, but a more suitable schema could be employed that achieves the same goals.

HN discussion> Don’t underestimate erasure. Theories for free is a useful thing. Indeed, phantom types are wildly underappreciated. Long ago, I created an library [1] that ensures the type safety of any runtime generated programs you create using it. It does this by typing the various stacks that are in play at any given time, but every new generic type on the CLR ends up creating new type descriptors in global data structures (…

HN discussion> Of the 3 assertions in the abstract, the obviously false one is #2: "Any posthuman civilization is extremely unlikely to run a significant number of simulations of their evolutionary history". When you realize that running a simulation of the universe requires more processing power than is available in the universe, this is very obviously false. I think you've expressed a number of confusions. First, I think you c…

HN discussionI've done them in C# with slightly less safety. https://higherlogics.blogspot.com/search/label/tagless%20int... The style of the construction is what matters most. If you're using JS then you're already giving up types, but the higher order abstract syntax is what lets you embed and play with language semantics.

HN discussionThe author should take a look at async.h[0], which is extremely simple. I don't think you need a scheduler, but you do need what Rust calls an "executor", which is a library of I/O functions and an event loop. HN discussion> This really isn't the same. If you're just building up objects/data structures in your host language, and calling functions/methods on them, then you're not creating a language. It doesn't matter how slick/fluent or whatever else your API is, you're just working in the host language. It can be. They're called EDSLs, "embedded domain specific languages". The point is to embed the language semantics in the host lang…

HN discussionRather than generic blobs, you can easily integrate versioning directly in your entity tables with only two extra fields: https://higherlogics.blogspot.com/2015/10/versioning-domain-... With this schema, you simply add an extra clause to each of your queries and they can simultaneously return the latest version or any past version.
