What Hacker News says?

  1. What I was hoping for was a bare-metal (not-run through VMs) container runtime like Joyent Triton[0] but with more pay-for-what-you-use pricing. Unlike VMs, which statically allocate mem whether you use it or not, containers have the chance to grow and reduce mem as workfloads go up and down, which means you could pay for GB/h of mem usage on the right-sized # of vCPU base. Not sure if any IaaS/PaaS is doing this. J…

  3. Fascinating read, albeit a sad one: I love RethinkDB, and use it personally every day in our particular production deployment.[1] But -- and to Slava's point -- we didn't/don't/wouldn't pay for it, and in that regard, we were part of the problem. That said, the constraint on that particular problem was that it had to be open source, and if it couldn't have been RethinkDB, it would have been some other open source da…

  5. " Should I use backticks? Command substitutions also come in this form: Correct: "`cmd`" Bad: `cmd` While it is possible to use this style correctly, it looks even more awkward in quotes and is less readable when nested. The consensus around this one is pretty clear: Avoid." This is how one can tell a rookie just learning to program in shell: usage of $() syntax is limited to Bourne family of shells which implement…

  7. For the record, there is no "proprietary [operating system]" involved here. The Triton stack (upon which Manta is based) runs on top of SmartOS[1], a wholly open source operating system built around an illumos[2] core. 9. From the CTO's blog post, it seems to me that Samsung became interested in Joyent not for its most famous product, Node.js, but for its new product, Manta, which is some sort of serverless, distributed, data-storage and processing service ( https://www.joyent.com/manta ). Manta might be well-suited for the new hotness, the Internet of Things. So that's how I saw it progressing. Samsung was looking into how to get in…

In case anyone's curious, I blogged about the backstory of the acquisition.[1] tl;dr: We at Joyent are elated, and we believe that this will be a huge win for our customers, for our technologies and for the communities that they serve! 13. You might want to consider Joyent's Smart Data Center. It is all opensource and you can buy support. A lot of the people leaving the engineering teams at Sun/Oracle ended up at Joyent. I think datacenter platforms will start to look more like "Cloud Hosting" and less like it currently does where we basically just slice up a server into many different servers. https://www.joyent.com/private-cloud https://github.com/j…

  15. I was interested myself, so I did a little google-foo. So Ben Noorddhuis was a major contributor to NodeJS and a volunteer (that is, not a Joyent employee). It turns out Ben rejected a pull request that would have made pronoun in the document gender neutral. The documents were already grammatically correct, but whoever made the pull request had a political preference for using a non masculine pronoun. Ben rightly sa…

  19. some people have problems with they way MVCC is implemented. like Mysql using rollback segments so it doesn't have issues with vacuuming [tho, there is tradeoffs with doing it that way as well]. the vacuuming issues are really scary and basically involve losing write access to the whole database. have a look at stuff like this: https://www.joyent.com/blog/manta-postmortem-7-27-2015 . i believe postgres have made a b…
