Too few sampled comments (3) to say how often HN recommends it.?

Why HN links it

Commenters link its posts on Android dialer network packets, a lolcat clone written in 64-bit assembly, and a caffeine half-life reference. The comments themselves don't judge the writing.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 3 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

  5. I started displaying a banner on my website [1] a while back for visitors using Chrome/Chromium telling them to "give Firefox a try for the future of the open web". I don't know how many people came across that or clicked the link, as I don't track that, but I enjoy doing my tiny part in letting people know. [1]: https://www.gkbrk.com

  11. I've done something similar recently; but instead of grabbing data from my bank, I chose to enter data manually from receipts. This makes it work for both cash and debit payments, and doesn't need any maintenance for API breakage. I find doing this data entry calming, to be honest. I wrote about it here https://gkbrk.com/2019/04/plaintext-budgeting/

  13. Don't roll your own crypto if you are releasing a product or if you are working on critical software. DO roll your own crypto [1] for learning, messing around if you enjoy recreational programming. It's an awesome topic to play with and rolling your own crypto can give you an appreciation for the solid algorithms that survived being cracked for a long time. It is very sad there there are corners of computer science…

  15. I've also been playing around with bit mixers and hash functions recently. I use avalanche diagrams to visually inspect the diffusion, and SSE (sum of squared errors) to compare the bias of different mixers. https://www.gkbrk.com/wiki/avalanche-diagram/ I guess the next step is to evolve / optimize good constants to improve them further, and rewrite everything in C to make evaluation faster.

  17. I use a plaintext double-entry system now. Wrote a small Python script to parse it as well. I put the code up here [1]. Before that, I was using SQLite with a shell script for a while to keep track of my expenses, code here [2]. 19. You can also put a DuckDuckGo search box, works well for website search and supports DDG instead of Alphabet. EDIT: Shameless plug if it gets the author to go with a non-google option https://www.gkbrk.com/wiki/DuckDuckGoSearchBox/

  21. I have an old and unfinished article [1] that uses geohash / quadtiles to implement the same thing. If your goal isn't "every location on Earth", you have a smaller bounding box (like a country or "all of Europe") and this will result in the squares being more precise, or the identifiers or word lists being shorter. Could be worth the trade-off depending on the requirements. [1]: https://www.gkbrk.com/wiki/Quadtiles…
