I wrote this post a while back: http://iamelgringo.blogspot.com/2008/12/hacking-your-food-su... I think that's one of the posts you were referring to. We haven't done once a month cooking for a while, though. We've actually outsourced a lot of our meal prep to Dream Dinners now. Link: http://www.dreamdinners.com/main.php?static=index You can either go there and prep the meals in a two hour period, or for an extra $2…

HN discussionWas it weeks/months/years until you felt comfortable writing an entire Web app with basic functionality? Comfortable? I don't know. Capable? a few months. Starting to flesh out your ideas? Within 1 month of starting an EARNEST effort to learn what it takes to write web apps. I was in your shoes about 15 months ago (roughly). I had ideas and wanted to be at least "sort of" able to flesh them out on my own. I had more…

HN discussionI just finished my first big project using Mechanical Turk. Instead of filling out a page here, I turned it into a blog post: http://iamelgringo.blogspot.com/2008/09/mechanical-turk-now-...

on “VC confidence plummets - fewer liquidity events, but startups are "much leaner and scrappier"”Pick a small project you want to work on, then start trying to make it real. Ask for help from people around you. People like helping other people, especially if 1. you make it easy for them, 2. you seem to be putting in a genuine effort. Tons of "Ask HN" posts on this topic have already been posted. The first step to showing people you're serious is to actually do your own research first. The post that got me start…

on “Ask HN: Teaching a non-programmer web development?”I don't think it's listed in one place - I would get a list of school from Wikipedia or the Dept. of Education (they must have a list somewhere), and put it out as a MT task. If you do this, do a search for how to properly use the service, as there seems to be a certain etiquette and way to interact with the Turkers to get best results. One example of the kind of post I mean is http://iamelgringo.blogspot.com/2008/0…
