What Hacker News says?
CBT-i more or less fixed me too. It should be noted that sleep restriction (the practice you're describing here) is only part of CBT-i but it seems to be the most important. I also gave up coffee and I stop looking at screens 30-60 mins before my bed time. Before the therapy ~30% of my nights were sleepless. HN discussionInsomnia is something I've dealt with for most of my adult life. I followed everything you were supposed to do, got blackout curtains, no coffee, no alcohol, exercised, but still had issues. This article below helped me realize the insomnia is actually a form of performance anxiety. Sitting in bed tossing and turning, mind racing wishing you were asleep is the problem. You have to train yourself that you can sleep a…

HN discussionWheezy Waiter has a video on trying biphasic sleep, and his conclusion was: If you wake up at 3, get up and do something. When you get tired, go back to sleep. Second sleep is the best sleep. I tried that for a while and want to try it again, because it worked great for the week I tried it before falling out of the habit. https://ilya.sukhar.com/blog/an-algorithmic-solution-to-inso...

HN discussionI've been having success over the last month at dramatically improving my sleep, and I'll say that bi-phasic or letting go of the anxiety of being awake in the middle of the night, is my last go-to related to sleep, behind a bunch of other things. What has really worked for me, and YMMV, as measured by a good 10-15 points a night as measured by my fitbit (admittedly a crude tool, but backed up by just feeling less f…

HN discussionHey HN! I'm a former insomniac that went through a behavioral therapy program to sleep better. I teamed up with some behavioral therapists to create Sleepedy, an iOS app that connects you with a sleep coach and follows an evidence based program to help you sleep better. Evidence-based treatment (EBT) refers to treatment that is backed by scientific evidence. That is, studies have been conducted and extensive researc…

HN discussionI've taken a multi-pronged approach including better bedtime routine, exercise, and tricks to get back to sleep when I wake up. Over the last 9 months I've been focusing on health and losing weight. A large part of this is that I'm doing 5+K on the treadmill every week day. I prefer to do this in the morning, and if I'm not on the treadmill by 7 it is going to interfere with my work. Between getting ready and coolin…
