What Hacker News says?

  1. If you want to store a large number of time series, influx might not be for you. For smaller bits of data (where the full dataset can fit on a single machine, or there is a very low amount of dimensionality in the data, influx is nice. However, if the data grows beyond what a single scaled up machine can achieve, take a look at druid (druid.io). It is a bit more involved in setting up than influx, but was built from…

  3. Ive done 2 data pipelines, one alot like what most people are are talking. The other I had to build for a startup with millions of monthly uniques but only seed funding (cant do a 30+k a month data eng bill). Went with custom event emission->kenisis->(druid & S3) and used imply ( https://imply.io/ ). Easy real time data analytics, auto "enrichment with druid lookups from a RDBMS, and a simple ui for slice/dice inves…

  5. This is impressive work: it's time consuming to set up and benchmark so many different systems! Impressiveness of the effort notwithstanding, I also want to encourage people to do their own research. As a database author myself (I work on Apache Druid) I have really mixed feelings about publishing benchmarks. They're fun, especially when you win. But I always want to caution people not to put too much stock in them.…

  9. FWIW, Imply repackaged Druid in such a way that should make it much much easier to set up and evaluate. We've been porting our docs over to Druid for 0.9.0: http://imply.io/docs/latest/quickstart There's also a production-ready docker distribution: https://hub.docker.com/r/imply/imply/

  11. Druid's main value add to the data infrastructure space is around power user-facing data applications at scale. The queries it is best at are OLAP/business intelligence style queries. It isn't really designed to be a general processing tool such as Hadoop or Spark. The open source data space is very complex, and there are many different solutions targeted towards many different use cases. Druid is better than other…

  15. Druid also does this, with pre-aggregation of streaming data along predefined dimensions for very fast cube-based analytics. It's not a relational database though and is just now getting a SQL interface through Apache Calcite. http://druid.io/ Imply is a startup with a modern cloud/on-prem distribution of Druid with a built-in visualization and querying tool: https://imply.io/
