Why HN links it

HN readers cite this post on the squircle shape, arguing Nokia's MeeGo/Harmattan design language used it before iOS 7. Comments link it as a source and do not judge the writing.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 6 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?

  1. I've always avoided the term "flat design" as I would call it an oversimplification of several different concepts and tools designers use. You might find this thing I wrote back in 2013, just before iOS 7 was unveiled, interesting: http://interuserface.net/2013/05/flat-is-not-the-opposite-of...

  5. I agree wholeheartedly. If they can build a solid platform, though, that can set the stage for a genuine breakthrough. I'd say the most important thing is to deal with the social flatland problem (which I explain here: http://interuserface.net/2010/02/buzz-facebook-and-social-fl... ), and then pretty much follow every suggestion Joey Tyson makes in this post: http://theharmonyguy.com/2010/05/10/dont-simply-build-a-m…

  7. Yes! It shouldn't be too hard for them to find some good UX people in the middle of SF and still flush with Kickstarter funds; they'll just need to know what to look for. Of course, there's still the issue of actually countering Facebook with a more organic social structure. 15. Unfortunately, the hard truth is that windowed applications in OS X aren't a well-behaved enough bunch for anything like this to work anytime soon. In 2010, I collaborated on a project to bring some of the features of my 2009 10/GUI concept to MacOS. We got it to a point where the likes of Safari, Finder, and TextEdit worked great and could have made a nice demo video, but the moment you threw in something like Phot…

  21. "Neumorphism" came and went because it was a clumsily unnecessary neologism tacked onto a loosely-defined trend. Adding more shading and depth cues to user interfaces is a broader trend that has continued since the popular repudiation of those tools in the early-mid 2010s, but the attempt to package this up and shoehorn it into a neat label alongside "skeuomorphic" and "flat design" was never a particularly useful e…

  23. Hi, Matt- Good to see you guys are taking a pragmatic approach with regard to your audience. My concern isn't even so much with the look or theme of the system as its social model and the UI for exposing that model. I've written about this somewhat: http://interuserface.net/2010/05/ http://interuserface.net/2010/02/buzz-facebook-and-social-fl... and there's an excellent if long-winded slide deck by Paul Adams here t…

  25. That's a great idea, but the Facebook app will always be the weak point, because everything you share (to specific users) through it will still be open for Facebook to use however it sees fit. Ultimately, I'd say this is the problem of social flatland: http://interuserface.net/2010/02/buzz-facebook-and-social-fl... Disclaimer: That's my blog.

  29. The squircle was actually Nokia's design language they used for Meego[1]. Back then Apple just used basic squares with rounded edges, the "unique" curverture mentioned here happened later. [1] https://interuserface.net/2011/06/own-a-shape/
