Why HN links it
HN readers link iroh.computer for its docs on the iroh peer-to-peer networking library and its sendme file-transfer tool, which handles QUIC connections and NAT traversal.

I also like SendMe [0]. I’ve used it to share files between local PC and server sometimes. And also to send large files to friends without cloud links. It’s written in Rust and based on iroh p2p library [1]. [0]: https://github.com/n0-computer/sendme [1]: https://www.iroh.computer/

HN discussionIn practice, the "ticket" provided by dumbpipe contains your machine's IP and port information. So I believe two machines could connect without any need for discovery infra, in situations that use tickets. (And have UPnP enabled or something.) HN discussioniroh seems to have a couple of "killer tools" already, known as dumbpipe[0] and sendme[1]. Although I am concerned that while dumbpipe does mention cryptography, sendme's webpage makes no mention of it (?). 0. https://www.dumbpipe.dev/ 1. https://iroh.computer/sendme

HN discussionThis is a good question. But it is worth noting that not everything has to scale globally. E.g. in iroh-sync (which is an experimental impl of the willow protocol) you are not concerned with global scaling. You care only about nodes that are in the same document. So while if you request hash QmciUVE1BqKPXMSvTTGwHZo1ywYdZRm9FfBvEJkB6J4USb via ipfs, you are trying to globally find anybody that has this hash, which is…

HN discussionI think this is how iroh works. They have "relays" which are servers that help establish a connection between 2 clients if necessary. https://www.iroh.computer/docs/concepts/relay

HN discussionSad to see it go having been a maintainer some years ago. For anyone wondering, there are more sustainable (with a viable, focused business backing the project) options to do p2p, namely Iroh - https://www.iroh.computer/ which was built by ex-IPFS ex-Protocol Labs devs (I have no relation to the team beyond having worked with them back in the day). Sadly Protocol Labs is doing.. ehh whatever now, except apparently s…

HN discussionyep! Iroh documents [1] give you a very nice primitive that is technically a CRDT, but in practice most people use it as a key-value store. We really wanted a mutable solution that would support real deletions (instead of tombstones), and starting with append-only logs locks you out of that choice. With Iroh + CRDTs you have three choices: 1. Use iroh's connection & gossip layers in conjunction with a mature CRDT li…

HN discussionIf you want an actual mesh p2p IP-network that can punch through firewalls/NATs you can use Tailscale/Headscale If you want a crypto-key addressable p2p connection-network there is a somewhat recent project which does this rather well: https://www.iroh.computer It punches through firewalls/NATs and establishes QUIC connections. They have two already useful PoC's: https://github.com/n0-computer/sendme https://github.…

HN discussionyep totally doable. You'd use iroh configured with mainline, Then write a custom protocol for the grpc bit: https://www.iroh.computer/docs/protocols/writing We use this a bunch for writing rpc protocols on iroh: https://github.com/n0-computer/irpc , but there's no reason you couldn't write one with grpc.
