Why HN links it

HN readers link Iwata Asks, a long-running interview series where Satoru Iwata talks with Nintendo developers about their games. It is valued for behind-the-scenes looks at Nintendo development, such as memory limits and early programming.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 11 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

  1. And another quote I've been meaning to find, which sums it up quite well I think. http://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#/wii/mario25th/4/3 > Iwata: That was fun for me, too. At the time, when someone came to me and said, "I'm having trouble because there isn't enough memory," I was—to be honest—really happy. (laughs) Seeing if you could achieve programming for the same functions with a smaller amount of memory w…

There's a long running series of interviews called "Iwata Asks" where Iwata would interview various Nintendo game developers around the time of their latest game release. Iwata certainly doesn't ask very hard hitting questions, but nonetheless they're interesting looks behind the scenes of Nintendo development and well worth reading. http://iwataasks.nintendo.com

  5. Very sad news. A true hacker. Started programming on a programmable calculator, with which he made games for his classmates. After he got himself a Commodore PET, he went to Nintendo claiming he can make games for them, and so he did. Edit: I found a PET quote from Iwata Asks. http://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#/3ds/creators/4/0 > Iwata: Disassembling! Wow, that really brings back memories. I remember getting…

  6. I think a lot about Treasure, a quirky game developer that tended to make a bunch of strange games in the past. I think their studio director and founder, Masato Maegawa, understood the value in being more hands-off in a leadership role. [1] [2] Part of me feels like Amazon and Google thought their super-direct top-down style would be successful in a creative project involving larger team, unaware of the lessons pre…

  11. > The focus on maps and gemini is hilarious. The first is literally the anti-use case, It reminded me of the Wii U Street View app and the interview with its developers (at https://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/wiiu/wii-street-u/... ). They were going for the same sort of a vibe, though it's unclear to me how many people actually ended up having that much fun with it.

  12. This doesn't feel like some special debugging area. If you really want another "area" try the second quest by putting your name as ZELDA. "This quest was created due to the programmers using only half of the space allocated for map data, so it was decided to use the other half as another quest." https://zelda.gamepedia.com/Second_Quest http://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#/ds/zelda/1/5
