  3. I also like both FreeBSD and Debian (have no real experience with the others). But on performance it varies a lot by workload. To take two examples: over the years at any given point in time, FreeBSD has had a better networking stack than Linux, but worse scalability to large numbers of cores. Though there is some ongoing sponsored work on the latter [1,2]. [1] http://www.ixsystems.com/whats-new/freebsd-foundation-a…

  5. I highly recommned this: https://www.ixsystems.com/freenas-mini/ You get FreeNas on good hardware by people who know what they are doing. I have been running this for years and I have no complaints exept that the 8 slot variant did not exists when I bought mine.

  7. You don't have to do it yourself. Why not just buy one of these: https://www.ixsystems.com/freenas-mini/ I have won and its pretty awesome, running for years, have replaced the disks multible times by now. Its very upgradable as well, you can put in more ram, caches and so on. Open Hardware is pretty much a no-go at the moment, but iXSystems does support a lot of Open Source. I would recommend this setup above any o…

  9. FreeNAS + voidlinux nuc running grafana + prometheus. Tbh I run hot and cold about self hosting since after work, I really really want to be able relax at home. Not wonder why the hell my nuc hasn't come up after a reboot. Or why is it so hard to increase the disk space on my FreeNAS https://www.ixsystems.com/community/threads/upgrading-storag...

  11. > but it's not contributing back and it doesn't have much influence. I understand the former. But with how Apple operates, it's really hard to believe they'd pull downstream from something they don't have some kind of soft power over. They do still pull downstream AFAIK? Maybe that's changed? >Ix systems I did some reading and saw a FreeBSD contributor ended up going to Apple until 2013 before he founded this compan…

  15. "There is no less information about BSD than "Linux", it is simply that BSD has no advertisement or companies behind pushing it.." Which is ironic since huge companies like netflix, sony, citrix, netapp and others make appliances based on FreeBSD and contribute a ton of code (Note, i am not at all disagreeing with your statement, i just find it ironic). IX Systems does push behind it a lot and does advertise it: htt…

  19. Or indeed PC-BSD. (-: PC-BSD's installer understands ZFS. It creates an all-ZFS system, including the root volume. The boot manager uses ZFS for "boot environments". * http://download.pcbsd.org/iso/10.2-RELEASE/amd64/docs/html/i... * https://www.ixsystems.com/whats-new/2013/10/31/the-revamped-... * https://blog.pcbsd.org/2013/06/pc-bsd-status-update/

  21. Ooh, these FreeNAS boxes for the home are very nice: https://www.ixsystems.com/freenas-mini/ When I built my home NAS there wasn't an off the shelf FreeNAS option and it was definitely a "research all the things, build your own system" with the huge caveat of "Did you put enough RAM in that?". The 8-bay one is particularly good value, rivalling similar systems by QNAP, and I personally do have a QNAP and if I were t…

  23. > Hardlocking when removing ZIL You cannot remove the ZIL, it's an integral part of ZFS. I assume you mean a SLOG[1]. That said, do you have an issue link? I'm curious. I know people have had some issues with importing pools with a bad or missing SLOG device, though most couldn't be reproduced. [1]: https://www.ixsystems.com/blog/o-slog-not-slog-best-configur...

  25. I ran into similar problems with my custom built FreeNAS too. It's still a great setup, but more work than I would like. When my server eventually dies, I'll probably replace it with one of the official FreeNAS Minis. https://www.ixsystems.com/freenas-mini/

  27. I will just share my experience with a usb stick. I have used a usb stick (SanDisk Ultra Fit) for the Freenas O.S.. That drive died in 6 months (24/7). In general Freenas suggests to use 2 mirrored, quality, name-brand USB drives as they can `wear out or fail unexpectedly`[1]. They not suggest USB drives for data storage and I never tried.
