What Hacker News says?

  1. I wrote about this recently in post about future startup ideas [1]. Go is young and building an IDE along with its evolution would be amazing. LightTable might be very successful with that, but I imagine the more exciting place for Go IDE experiments could be Android and tablets. As multicore mobile takes over, I think a few years out apps in Go might be a popular thing; and building software on the target platform…

  3. Okay, time to build drones full of atmosphere sensors! The weather forecast is about to get a lot better....this is excellent news for crowdsourcing remote data about the atmosphere. I've been pulling pressure measurements from smartphones for a while, but a core problem is that a lot of weather develops over areas of low smartphone density. Sending out drone fleets will be a most excellent solution; they're reusabl…

  5. Thanks - I have about 400,000 barometers connected globally right now. Our data archive is about 1.5B measurements, we're getting about 5M per day. We will use this as the primary new input to WRF model runs, outputting high-res forecasts. The network I run is called PressureNet, you can see our website at http://pressurenet.io or have a look at our flagship Android app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id…

  7. I have a vision for a weather data collection app using the camera and accelerometer to automatically take sky photos, but I don't think the APIs support it yet: http://www.jacobsheehy.com/2013/05/weather-forecasting-with-...

  9. Users correcting the weather in-app is a huge curiosity of mine. I first blogged about that like 8 years ago for a now-defunct project: http://www.jacobsheehy.com/2013/12/locally-crowdsourced-weat... I have also re-implemented this feature in All Clear on Android [1]. My main lesson from all this so far is that it is useful and fun to collect and show the data, and real insights can be had by users seeing their peer…

  11. Indeed, their lack of openness is frustrating. I recently wrote[1] about the importance of open source code, and open data too, specifically in terms of crowdsourcing projects for scientific advancement. It'd be great if more of these projects were open, especially the ones with "open" in their name. [1] http://www.jacobsheehy.com/2014/02/open-source-software-is-i... (Full disclosure: I run an open project, Pressure…
