Too few sampled comments (12) to say how often HN recommends it.?

Why HN links it

HN readers link Jake Goulding's blog for Rust FFI material, especially the FFI omnibus with examples of calling Rust from other languages, plus posts on Rust on Arduino and writing C-compatible libraries in Rust.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 12 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?

  1. Google's results have definitely become more quirky. Just now I was writing some SQLite database code and was wondering how the sum() aggregate handles integer overflow. So I searched for "sqlite integer overflow" in DDG and Google. To my surprise the first result in Google is someone's random blog post[0] from 2011 describing their experience which doesn't answer my question at all. I am very surprised Google decid…

I won't do this justice, so I'll point you to the Rust book on this subject: https://doc.rust-lang.org/book/second-edition/ch19-01-unsafe... In short, at the moment, if you want a stable ABI, you must export an un_mangled C interface. This is easy enough. One of my favorite sites is this for FFI stuff: http://jakegoulding.com/rust-ffi-omnibus/ It covers a bunch of languages, and suggests techniques for overcoming an…

  9. I wrote on a similar topic [1], about writing system libraries in Rust with a C API and bindings to other languages. Which covers a bit of this, plus some of the sharp edges of FFI. Most of the trickier parts of it are covered in the FFI omnibus [2]. Also worth checking out is the cbindgen tool [3]. Rust produces standard linkable system libraries. You can produce dynamic libraries or static libraries on all supported platforms. For actual examples of using Rust with other languages through these libraries this site is great: http://jakegoulding.com/rust-ffi-omnibus/

  17. This is all personal opinion so take it with a grain of salt. I think Rust could do some serious C++ competition if it could dethrone C++ from some platform or have a worthy alternative. That is I think Rust really needs a killer app/platform/problem similar to how Swift has Apple devices and DevOps now have Go. If Rust could get into a gaming platform or have a really good gaming library like Unity it could have a…

  19. > Think pass-by-value structs with only fixed size fields. There are (at least) three issues with that: 1. not all FFIs can handle structs, according to the Rust FFI omnibus GHC's doesn't[0] 2. the callee side must be able to express on-stack by-value structs, many (most?) managed languages don't, either not supporting them or having them only as optimisation (based on escape analysis) 3. and finally the layout (and…

I don't know when this was last updated, but: http://jakegoulding.com/rust-ffi-omnibus/ It's got a nice breakdown of how to bring rust libraries into a few languages. There are a few tutorials about how to make rust produce a static or shared library, but it's pretty straightforward.
