What Hacker News says?

  1. I went ahead and used it yesterday to change the background image of my site to save a couple (426kb) of bytes on page load. While you recommend using smaller image sizes, it still worked well on a 1920 x 1080 image and only took ~10 minutes to run in the background with n = 2500. I did add an additional step (as lots of extra triangles are generated with a large n like this), which is to put it through SVGOMG[1] to…

  3. It's a good idea to run SVGs through SVGO before you use them. In this case, the robot SVG data can be shrunk by almost 50% by using SVGO (or svgomg https://jakearchibald.github.io/svgomg/ ) with a precision of 0 and using the 'prefers viewbox' option. I didn't try the others.

  7. > The W3C version of the story goes something like this. The rise of apps has weakened the web. In the pre-app days, the web was the only game in town, so companies had to play by web rules: open standards, open web. But now that apps exist and nearly everyone uses them, big companies can boycott the web, forcing their users into apps instead. That just accelerates the rise of apps, and weakens the web even more. Ap…

  11. That is a very deceptive way to put it. https://jakearchibald.github.io/isserviceworkerready/ Safari is intentionally crippled in several areas. Its very specific and obvious. It is dishonest for you to at this point pretend Apple is going full force for web standards while they are explicitly not implementing features that are available everywhere else. And how those specific features line up directly as features w…

  13. Also is the svg itself optimized? Usually possible to take a lot off them with tool like svgomg: https://jakearchibald.github.io/svgomg/

  15. This needn’t be true. You can use a service worker to make the code load when offline, and IndexedDB to store data. As a trivial example, https://jakearchibald.github.io/svgomg/ (which has no data storage requirements) works just fine offline. Offline support is a banner feature of the PWA (progressive web apps) movement.

  17. You can minify those a lot. I tried some on https://jakearchibald.github.io/svgomg/ and got ~20%-30% without any visual changes.

  23. When I first heard someone talking about "Progressive Web Apps" I thought they were talking about "Progressive Enhancement" [1]. Turns out doing a PWA is just basically about using the "Service Workers" API [2] and the practices around that. This nice article does a lengthy trace on the origins of the "PWA" term [3]. The same guy that started the "Service Workers" spec in Github [4] created the PWA marketing campaig…

  25. Awesome work! I ran the 4 shape example through SVGOMG and lowered the precision slider down until it didn't affect the perceived output. The result was about 40% of the original size. https://jakearchibald.github.io/svgomg/ SVG tested: https://camo.githubusercontent.com/ffa6eed9348fcd42454fc3916... 27. Yeah this is crazy neat but the unnecessary precision is a real bummer that could be solved by just restricting things to three decimal places. For example when I use a utility like https://jakearchibald.github.io/svgomg/ to optimize, I see a 3.53k -> 2.21k reduction for the sphere with lighting. This is not just from precision reduction but also using simple paths over polygons ... there could likely be increased s…
