James Baker's personal blog at jbaker.io covers programming and systems. Since 2022, 4 different Hacker News readers have linked it 6 times, most often “SIMD accelerated sorting in Java – how it works and why it was 3x faster”. The last post was in 2022, but the archive is still widely read.

Why HN links it
HN commenters cite James Baker's posts on Project Loom and virtual threads, including replacing the virtual thread scheduler and using continuations for distributed systems testing. They are linked as background sources.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 3 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?
this is really cool I want to use it for deterministim simulation testing. Question, isn't shadow locking essentially the same as continuations in virtual threads? how does this compare to replacing the scheduler in virtual threads? see https://jbaker.io/2022/05/09/project-loom-for-distributed-sy...

HN discussionIt was explored a bit in a blog article with some sample code. One big issue with this approach right now is that the scheduler is not officially user replaceable. It's possible using reflection to do so though, at least is was in 2022, the internal code may have changed since then. There's been some indication from the OpenJDK team that this might be an officially supported feature in the future. Blog article: http…

HN discussionThe easiest way for a beginner to do SIMD numerical computing now is with Java. Java's Panama project is working on their 6th preview (JEP-450) for the September 21 (LTS) release, but the released Java 20 previews JEP-426 features, including - basic math - transcendental functions (sin, cos...) - load/store to foreign memory e.g., to interop with C - compress/expand lanes, for parallel selection or filtering - bit-w…
