What Hacker News says?
I don't think so. It's pretty standard for companies with a global presence – they need to employ to find out how (potential) customers use technology in other parts of the world with different cultural and socioeconomic conditions. Intel, IBM, Microsoft, Nokia, etc. all do this. A great blog from a Nokia ethnographer: http://janchipchase.com/themes/future-perfect/ .

Because, you say, that's where the money is. Well... no. That's where 2% of the money is. Maybe 5%. Out there, in the big wide world, there are tens of thousands of other lifestyle niches, other places to see. Take a look at that Nokia guy's blog, http://www.janch…

HN discussionJan Chipchase (resident anthropologist @Nokia) calls them Informal repair culture. Neither Nokia nor it's competitors publish an official hacking manual. This has evolved from a need to have a cellphone 24x7 & where the market is highly sensitive to price. Read, Informal repair culture: http://www.janchipchase.com/repaircultures . Quoting verbatim: "The informal repair services that are offered are quite simply driv…
