Javier Chávarri's personal blog at javierchavarri.com covers programming. Since 2019, 12 different Hacker News readers have linked it 13 times, most often “Data-first and data-last: a comparison of APIs (2019)”. No feed was found, so read it on the site itself.
Too few sampled comments (5) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
Javier Chávarri's posts cover ReScript/BuckleScript, record performance and the data-first versus data-last argument-order debate. HN readers link them when discussing pipe operators and function argument order.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 5 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.
Hi there! 👋Welcome to my site, where I write about the challenges of creating software products, type systems and programming languages, especially JavaScript and OCaml.

What Hacker News says?
ReScript changed their api from data-last to data-first for this reason. Coupled with amazing type inference you will almost always receive correct autocompletions (that are type valid as well). It is a great experience. It is sometimes still a problem when you define a function without reference to it (because the types are unnkown ofcourse). You will have to add types to it or call the function before implementing…

HN discussionThere's also ReasonML for those looking to scratch the itch sooner. Also, don't be turned off by the sea of comments. Pick one, they are all great. but yes ML language enthusiasts can be a bit overenthusiastic, but I don't fault them for that. They are all anxious to spread the gospel of ML. The Reason community on discord is excellent, one of the best I have had the pleasure to be a part of. I didn't go with straig…

HN discussionI would bet my money on Bucklescript/ReasonML/ReScript. https://github.com/rescript-lang/rescript-compiler/wiki/Why-... https://www.javierchavarri.com/performance-of-records-in-buc... Its Standard library Belt is optimized to compile to efficient JS too. (edit: added line about Belt)

HN discussionThe discussion and reasons of "data first" vs. "data last" can be found by searching these terms (including type inference"). For example for Rescript (TAFKA Bucklescript) which changes OCaml's data last to a dáta first syntax. https://www.javierchavarri.com/data-first-and-data-last-a-co... which does explain the actual "technical" reasons behind the decision.

HN discussionYou're right, this also causes tradeoffs between good compiler errors and ease of composition when considering pipe first and pipe last. A good article on that: https://www.javierchavarri.com/data-first-and-data-last-a-co...
