What Hacker News says?

  1. I've evaluated Netlify for my blog at https://jdsalaro.com and I'd advise against that unless you're missing a CMS on your static site generator. Other than that I personally felt it didn't bring much to the table. I do admit that their CMS is slick, but it wasn't really a feature I needed. Of course I'm not sure what other people are using them for, but in my case GitLab/GitHub covered all my bases pretty well sinc…

  3. The only middle-way sort of solution I found a long time ago, even before joining the company, while looking where to host https://jdsalaro.com was to use GitLab, they being open-source and quite public about their, now our, values. Nowadays I'm planning on writing again and have tried a setup that seems to be alright: - migrate from Pelican to Hugo since the community is more vibrant, responsive and the themes much…

Precisely, I truly do not understand how these people witness a potentially catastrophic event of such proportions and instead of asking "dear God, I wonder how many backdoors there are in the Windows operating system that we don't know a…

  7. I certainly share your nostalgia. I've restarted my blog ( https://jdsalaro.com ) this year and, as painful as it is, I've chosen to go against the grain and ditch Medium and the like. It always was just my place to nerd out and I noticed earlier this year that I had become disenchanted, but that taking action and not resignation was the solution. What if it doesn't rank, people don't enjoy my writing style or what…

  14. If you mean which services I went to, I pulled the plug on proprietary or at least non-open-source services and walled gardens. I'm now using GitLab Pages to host both my blog and the notes I had there. I use Sphinx to manage structure and templating. I have created a /notes folder which gets made available under the same domain ( https://jdsalaro.com/blog/category/notes/ ) which will contain all stuff I had in Ever…

  15. I actually have them documented here and the aliases file is autogenerated whenever I add or update new ones :) https://jdsalaro.com/note/wrist-friendly-git-shortcuts I decided against git aliases in favour of shell aliases, but people might still find them interesting. For me, and my wrists, gs and gf have been game-changing.

I compared some all-time favorite programming fonts last week; you might enjoy that write-up :) ( I tried not to be too biased towards Fira Code as well as JetBrains and Julia Mono ) https://jdsalaro.com/blog/best-programming-fonts/ I also got quite a few suggestions on Mastodon and Tildes, which were added retroactively.

  17. Just chiming in, and quite happy to see this thread pop up! I was having a conversation elsewhere about how it's up to us to create the internet we want and bring back the allegedly already passed golden age of connection through creation! My blog is https://jdsalaro.com and my latest comparison of programming fonts at https://jdsalaro.com/note/best-programming-fonts is a good place to start :D Cheers!

  18. > Now it's just a static file server. If it was just the blog it would be even easier to host. The website is more reliable and requires virtually no maintenance. Same here, I'm using Sphinx and loving it ! I very much appreciate the ability to get all nitty gritty whenever I want to implement something "special" like the Favorite Git Aliases post which when edited gets turned into a .bash_aliases file and pushed to…
