Why HN links it
HN readers link Chris Anderson's blog as background on CouchDB, P2P web and HTML5 storage. The comments cite its posts for further information and do not judge the writing.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 7 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

My understanding is that in CouchDB you can't guarantee that older versions of documents will still exists (they might be there, but they could have been removed by compaction or not replicated). However, there is a fairly nice way of storing older versions of documents - hold older versions as file attachments on the document. HN discussionThe thing I found most interesting, is the use of couchdb and python for Raindrop instead of XUL. My hypothesis: Due to CouchDB being used by both Canonical (UbuntuOne) and now Mozilla in new interesting 'products I'm more and less convinced that CouchDB will be become a the choice for data storage. It seems like a good replacement (although comparing the two isn't really fair) for sqlite. Why? Because it supposedly…

HN discussionActually, whatever is on the user's machine (or in a Couch in the cloud controlled by the user) is 100% under the control of the user. They are free to alter the application, validations, etc, as they see fit. However, when the user attempts to replicate changes to another server (maybe the original source server, maybe another server not under their control) it is the validation functions on the target server that…

HN discussionUnfortunately you can only create a view from the original data, there is no way to create views whose input is other views. This means that you cannot do anything really interesting with values from multiple documents. You can aggregate data from several documents using the reduce functionality into buckets, but you can't process that data further. I've come to this idea also - when we do get it the world changes.…

HN discussionthere isnt enough information to possibly make that distinction The author generously provided his prototype which conveys enough information for me to judge the implementation: http://jchrisa.net:5984/toast/_design/toast/channel.html#Cou... And my judgement is: The author is doing it wrong. Wrong as in eating his soup with a fork.
