What Hacker News says?

  1. I like it, but I think it's a matter of preference. Another article from the author: https://jeffhuang.com/designed_to_last/ Nothing is going to break a static next.js page that wouldn't also break this page. Hosting space and bandwidth are cheap, and while next.js has some overhead, it has built-in tree shaking to compress what may be a 200MB node_modules directory into less than a megabyte. Next.js also changes a…

  3. Yes, that's a good way to put it. I've been campaigning against this trend for a while in any project I'm involved in [ https://jeffhuang.com/designed_to_last/ ]. The toolchain is simply bloated, and pieces brittle. Many of the projects out there would not last past an OS upgrade.

  9. > This is the grey area I am talking about. You licensed the rights exclusively to ACM, in perpetuity. In fact, your own publication of the pdf may also be non-compliant, but nobody has sued you as that would be political suicide The "Post" section of the page linked by lazyjeff says: >Otherwise known as "Self-Archiving" or "Posting Rights", all ACM published authors of magazine articles, journal articles, and confe…

  11. From the website you linked: >Authors who wish to retain all rights to their work can choose ACM's author-pays option, which allows for perpetual open access through the ACM Digital Library So, this requires the author, and by extension, taxpayers in most cases, to pay a couple of thousand to ACM to put a pdf online. How does this make sense ? >And the copyright block in one of my papers as an example: https://jeffh…

  13. Sorry for a back-and-forth replies, but I don't want readers to be misled: > You do not retain the copyright, and the only permission you get is to share it for classroom use with some other constraints. Authors posting them on their university websites is a grey area that is likely non compliant but it would be really bad PR for ACM to go after such instances. 21. This solution is on the user side, which is great because each person can get and manage saved pages for themselves. But if we're looking for a developer side solution, then making pages that last an order of magnitude longer may be better for everyone in the long run, e.g. https://jeffhuang.com/designed_to_last/

  23. I've been looking at the bias in rankings for a little while. I think one way to identify and raise awareness of the biases, is just put rankings together side-by-side. I did this for computer science programs, and there's some interesting differences that I noticed: https://jeffhuang.com/computer-science-open-data/#bias-in-co...

  25. Not sure why you seem to think researchers are flowing to Google. Microsoft Research is still the biggest name in distributed systems, if not CS in general. They have been consistently producing high-quality papers [1]. [1] http://jeffhuang.com/best_paper_awards.html

  27. The by-instituion ranking is particularly interesting: https://jeffhuang.com/best_paper_awards.html#institutions Some of those are obvious if you've been in the field a while, but I think it's notable that big names like Intel, Harvard and NASA are so lowly ranked when compared to others on the list. Also Notable, none of the big names in the field won any of these: Jeff Dean, Geoff Hinton, Yann Lecun, Andrew Ng, Yo…
