What Hacker News says?
Yes, delete the misses. 250k total. About 700 celebrities. I was predicted the day of death too, so each required 365 tweets. I did a combination of scraping IMBD + manual selection plus filling in the details. The whole process could probably be automated and I regret not doing that. It would be wild to see this in 2020... I did consult actuarial tables mainly to decide how many of each age to include. With that fe…

HN discussionOf course. I think the idea of the 2-3 person indie team or even solo developer is quite romantic. For instance: http://jere.in/sneaking-into-rohrers-castle-part-1 With that last comment though, I was mainly referencing AAA games (e.g. Bioshock Infinite ).

HN discussion>I've independently come up with the same decisions on many of these points and, weirdly, a very similar blog design Yea. I feel the same way, though strangely a lot of this is recent and I didn't have the same opinion a few years ago. A portfolio site I made just 3 years ago looks quite immature now. I just put this together with a little static generator a few weeks ago and it's the first time I've posted it anywh…

HN discussionYea, I've tried, but haven't been able to get anything about this to the front page. Wrote a blog post about it: http://jere.in/lets-make-a-game I wanted to get the word out earlier, but it's not too late to start and still have a whole 7 days! I'm starting tomorrow morning.

HN discussionPerhaps you're right and the board game is crap. From the presentations I have watched, I think the challenge is more about ideas than it is about building a complete game. And presenting those ideas carefully.... that is marketing. However, Chain World is a simple extrapolation of Minecraft. You can evaluate whether that is "utter crap" pretty easily. Plus he's made at least 10 other games, many of which are public…

HN discussionThat reminds me of something that has nothing to do with C or obfuscation. There was a coding puzzle (read: hiring tool) posted here exactly a year ago. You were supposed to take a simple cellular automata, figure out what the code was doing, and add something interesting. I created a vertical shooter where the enemies (and your bullets) were subject to conway's game of life: http://jere.in/snow/ By the way, it turn…

HN discussionSeems fairly simple to me. Tightening up the odds and the trip-to-trip 20% discount means he would be seeing a nearly 10% return on every visit. Those odds don't sound like good business. Re: the card counting thing, is it really that clear cut? He sounds like a sharp guy. Couldn't he just be pattern matching and getting a small advantage without actively trying to do card counting? I'm kind of talking out of my ass…

HN discussionIn order to make the simulation hypothesis remotely believable, you have to assume a dozen premises which are nonstarters. In particular: >Simulating the entire universe down to the quantum level is obviously infeasible, unless radically new physics is discovered. But in order to get a realistic simulation of human experience, much less is needed I'm glad Bostrom says simulating the universe is infeasible (most peop…

HN discussionAwesome. I love the idea of wagr. It's like an informal LongBets. Kudos on learnx also. My list is not so impressive, but here goes: -I made a wilderness survival game for 7DRL 2013. http://humbit.com/rogue/ It's not for everyone, but it did make a "Best of 2013" list for roguelikes. -I made my own static site generator in PHP that uses S3/cloudfront. Because why not. The result is a fast blog I think looks great. h…

HN discussion>Note it says "they'd accidentally left off" -- it doesn't say "he'd accidentally left off", which to me suggests Craig was participating in the verification. Yes! I had made that exact point in an updated footnote: http://jere.in/dr-wrong-and-the-art-of-digital-misdirection#...
