JMS55's Blog is a personal blog at jms55.github.io about programming and games. Since 2024, 9 different Hacker News readers have linked it 22 times, most often “Virtual Geometry in Bevy 0.14”. It is still writing: the last post was on 2026-09-18, and you can follow it by feed.
Too few sampled comments (3) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
Linked posts cover implementing virtual geometry, a Nanite-like rendering technique, in WebGPU and Bevy. Commenters cite the 2024 virtual geometry post as a reference for how much code such a feature takes.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 3 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?
> and so far only Unreal Engine's editor does it Not a major/mainstream engine by any means (a small Rust ECS game engine) but Bevy also supports something similar under the feature name "Virtual Geometry", mentioned here: https://bevyengine.org/news/bevy-0-14/#virtual-geometry-expe... Also, a technical deep dive into the feature from one of the authors of the feature: https://jms55.github.io/posts/2024-06-09-virtua…

HN discussionName and description are very confusing and a trademark violation since despite the claims it seems to be completely unrelated to actual Nanite in UE5, just an implementation of something similar by a person unaffiliated with UE5. There is also Bevy's Virtual Geometry that provides similar functionality and is probably much more useful since it's written in Rust and integrated with a game engine: https://jms55.githu…

HN discussionI've been working on raytraced lighting in the Bevy game engine, using wgpu's new support for hardware raytracing in WGSL. The initial prototype is launching with the release of Bevy 0.17 tomorrow, but there's still a ton left to improve. Lots of experimenting with shaders and different optimizations. I wrote a blog post about my initial findings recently: https://jms55.github.io/posts/2025-09-20-solari-bevy-0-17

HN discussionHere's a blog post[1] from last year regarding an open-source implementation of virtual geometry. The linked code is maybe a couple thousand lines. It's not something you'd write in an afternoon, but it's also not the towering monument of complexity that Epic Games pretends it is. [1]: https://jms55.github.io/posts/2024-06-09-virtual-geometry-be... Edit: I don't mean to sound disparaging - it's some genuinely cool a…

HN discussionSelf promotion: I've been working on a WebGPU version of Nanite for over a year now. If you found the OP's work interesting, you might enjoy my very long blog posts on the topic. https://jms55.github.io/posts/2024-06-09-virtual-geometry-be... https://jms55.github.io/posts/2024-11-14-virtual-geometry-be...

HN discussionA new article I wrote following up on my last post[0], with all the changes coming to virtual geometry (a 3d renderer similar to Unreal Engine 5's Nanite) in the 0.15 release of the Bevy game engine. [0]: https://jms55.github.io/posts/2024-06-09-virtual-geometry-be...
