Why HN links it
HN readers link this blog for technical teardowns of Apple's Lightning connector, including its data lines, the Tristar and HiFive chips, and how non-MFi cables and adapters are detected. Commenters cite it as a source.

What Hacker News says?
I can't find any on Google that specifically are made without the data lane. Maybe these magnetic ones don't do data[0]. Could also try burning the data lanes on the lightning part of the cable[0] (although you might have issues if it's a lightning-to-C cable, I would guess it uses the data lanes for power negotiation). 0: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/3-in-1-cable-led-ligh... 1: https://nyansatan.github.io…

HN discussionFrom my preliminary research, 30-pin lasted a little less than a decade. However, from my understanding, the replacement of 30-pin with Lightning is not because of mechanical reasons. One of my 30-pin devices is still with me, and it works flawlessly. 30-pin connector is in fact a compact ribbon cable with plethora of interfaces and signals (analog audio i/o, FireWire, USB, Video, etc.) [0]. Lightning replaces this…

HN discussionThis looks like an under-recognized, purposefully-anti-competitive gambit to lock people further into Apple's hardware ecosystem, limit consumer choices, and purposely ruin a customer's product if they stray outside the walled garden. Both of the "tristar" and "hydra" chips are fragile and prone to degradation, when they are connected directly to the Lightning port. https://store.rossmanngroup.com/ics-components-and…

HN discussion"When a Lightning cable is just lying somewhere connected to a charger/computer, but not connected to a device, HiFive limits current on the PWR to a really small value (around 10-15 mA according to my measurements). To enable full current, 0x74 request must be issued by Tristar and processed by HiFive." https://nyansatan.github.io/lightning/
